Personal Statement Help

it might not be funny... however it does show that you know what the chicago-school is and what they believe in. i only used this joke as a suggestion, not the be-all and end-all of options

of course the likes of posner and calabresi arent going to chuckle at a joke that is obviously taking the piss out of their beliefs and practices. other institutionalists such as veblen or galbraith might like it tho because it highlights the ineptitude of being so free market orientated

i know i sound like a massive commy saying that sort of stuff but trust me, im not

Well for the showing an interest part, i've talked about keeping up to date with the news, related books i've read and topics that i've studied which interested me. I agree that a joke is probably high risk and low reward so i wouldn't try that. One of the reasons i'm after a quote is that i know some of the more respected universities like them. For example when i went to Exeter they seemed to think they were a good idea. Are there any other ways that you can recommend to start the statement if i don't use a quote?

well for starters, what are the areas of economics that interest you? one of main things u need to do is to stand out from other applicants

You're thinking of the wrong Calabresi. The father is more of a "liberal", the son is a mouth breathing true believer.

simo_yes- For areas of economics, i've mentioned what i like about macro and micro and i've put a little bit about the Soviet Union changing from a planned economy.
