Something finally clicked into place with PES yesterday.
Usually when I play a World Cup or something, I pick a reasonably good team such as Russia or Poland...a team which I would hope to have a chance of winning the tournament with. Nearly every match, I would find that I had the bulk of possession (usually about 60%-40% ratio in my favour) and I would do all the pressurising, trying to score. This is what leads to the most irritating aspects of PES coming to the surface...the misplaced final pass, loads of shots hitting the post and bar...then the AI team go on a counter attack and your defenders start doing that annoying, uncontrollable "run striaght towards the ball" thing and the AI team score with their only chance of the game. I start to get annoyed and swear at the TV.
Yesterday, I decided to have a go as Saudi Arabia on level 5 and just went with the default formation and tactics, just to see how hard it would be. I sat back and absorbed pressure and then hit on the occassional counter-attack. The possession ratio was more like 35%-65% but it's the best session of PES i've ever played, so much more fun and much less frustration. There is more joy in scoring with a crap team with your only chance of the game.
It somehow seemed more realstic than ever. I'll be playing it like this from now on.
I really look forward to PES 2 and hopefully we'll get the chance to play as the real minnows such as San Marino and Andorra...it'll be great fun to play against France, Holland, Italy, etc, and just trying to stop them scoring and then sneek a goal on the break.
btw mister X - which forum was it you saw the post from the German guy about PES 2 having 800 teams?
