[PES09] Why is shooting such a crap shoot?

The Dopefish

I have been a fan of the PES series ever since the ISS days, and even back then directional shooting wasn't so terrible. I can't think of many reasons to gripe about PES09 — graphics, AI, physics are all excellent — but there aren't many soccer games in time that have taken shooting away from the player. The left analog stick does NOTHING to affect the direction of a shot; 98 times out of 100 you're going to plant the ball somewhere in the middle of the goal, and those other two times you might hit a corner but considering the infrequency of such an event I'm more willing to chalk that up to luck.

While FIFA generally has nothing on PES in terms of gameplay, shooting in FIFA is at least logical and consistent. You aim for the left side, the ball will go left; aim right, the ball goes right; aim low, the shot is low, you get my point. Free kicks in FIFA are a lot easier, too, but I'm sure I'm the only one who would complain about this. I'm not talking about scoring goals, though. I'm talking about even clearing the wall and having a chance. Even after a boatload of practice, I can take 100 shots from within 20m and score 5 or 10 times, and that is with shot+R2. Outside of 20m, my accuracy drops precipitously. In FIFA, in practice, I can score maybe 20% of the time from at least 20m, and higher closer. Like I said, though, I believe I am alone in my disdain for PES's free kick system and I'll have to live with it.

My main issue however comes shooting in close. You or someone you know has probably run into this: you're in close (15-20m or closer) and you prep a shot. I would logically try to aim for, say, the near low corner but of course the game has other plans and ends up firing a shot right at the keeper. He spits out a rebound and a trailing teammate is there and you go to set up another low shot on the near side but, again, the shot manages to hit the keeper, sometimes while he's still down! This is probably the most maddening part of shooting and I'm really struggling to find something that works consistently.

Stranger still is that while I don't seem to be the only one having this problem, I seem to be in the minority. And I've read other threads on here and other boards looking for tips. Most people seem to vary on thoughts but for the most part the suggestion is to lay off the turbo before taking a shot, and to aim the left stick slightly towards your shooting foot. I've yet to try this, but I'm just blown away that PES has tried to go away from directional shooting and leave things up to the computer.
