PES2 vs. Fifa2003

What do you say?

I've played the demo (Fifa2003) and WE6, and it looks to that Fifa is the winner. I know that WE6 and PES2 are not the same but as far as I can read, theres is not a big difference.

I've played the PES for a long time, and thought that it was the only soccer I would ever play. But EA grabbed them selves by the balls and made a so far brilliant game.

But lets wait and see to the 1st of november.

Personally, I'm not an immature little kid, and therefore I prefer PES/WE.

I dunno... I've played PES and Winning Eleven 6 for as long as FIFA2003's been out. I can't stand the two, in all honesty. I remember getting the ball coming up to the defenders, stopping.. and they'd just stand there like flat little arcade stick figures. I liked WE 6 more, but I was getting so annoyed with the game, I cringe thinking about it now. The both of them are here, and I have both the european and japanese ps2 with me... but I haven't touched them.

The announcing... what the hell's with that? Never before have I been so annoyed with sound coming from a game. The graphics... look like some cheap japanese piece of tripe. Animation... horrible. Look at the character models they're working from. Do these artists not know what the human body looks like? I did like the slowed down gameplay and the more realistic feel compared to the previous FIFA's but was so annoyed by the overall cheap look and feel of the game I couldn't enjoy it.

Although 2003 has flaws, I have fun playing it. I look for 2004 to clean up the game and put more into it. I can't see PES evolving much in the next year, to tell you the truth.

And what's with this PES is the god of video games? Bow down now! Anything else is unacceptable. It's funny what a cult some of you guys are. People are afraid to say anything bad about PES for fear of retribution. Their online personnas being bashed for not being real. pshhhh..

Speaking of good games.... No One Lives Forever 2 is sooo good! Smooth as silk, fun as hell

Ive just played the PES2 demo in game and thought it wasnt too bad. However, the character models are awful, the shooting the ball just floats and a long pass never goes to a player, its got a good short passing game but thats it though. I dont think PES will develop much as you can see from their 1st ever version its near enough the same, apart from graphics(which still arent great). Fifa players know that as they release it every year they have to change some things to make it more interesting and enjoyable to play but it had backfired. The shooting went horrible as well as passing and ball control but they have realised this and as know they have the foundations to make it better and better from now on and we'll have an ultimate game over the next releases. Graphics are second to none of any other foory game.

I have played FIFA from 98 to 2002.
That's when I discovered WE5 (PES in Europe)
Then I stopped playing FIFA.
PES/WE5 was the best and closest thing to real football.

Then came WE6 and this just blows away anything FIFA can produce. Man, this game has the best gameplay, the best animations and decent graphics. Sure, they don't have all the kits or any leagues. You may not be able to do 360 degree spins or score from the halfway line. But then how often do you see that in real football

Some of the graphics and animations in FIFA 03 are good.
I like the stadia, the kits.
But some of the animations in WE6 are better. For example goal celebrations in WE6 are authentic.
Shooting, passing are so life-like.
But once you have authentic gameplay (like in WE6), you just don't bother too much about the eye-candy.

Sure, FIFA has all the leagues, tournaments, real names.
That is an advantage over WE6.

You can still score from the half-way line in FIFA 03. I did that with Ivan Helguera....the boal bounced 3 times in front of Seaman and he just watched it go in....
The corners are horrendous. Free kicks are not very intuitive.
Try the setpieces in WE6, you have to practice to do well and the sense of satisfaction when you do score is great !!

I think FIFA 03 is a step in the right direction, but in terms of gameplay they are still behind PES2/WE6.

I can't agree with you about goal celebration. In WE6 i just like the celebration when they hug each other after scoring. the other celebrations is not so good for me (But i like how the japanesse comentator screaming for goal so much). I like goal celebration cut scene in Fifa 2003 when you score first goal. But why cut scene just happen for the first goal??(just like in wc2002). I think it will be better if they make goal celebration cut scene after every goal. just like in fifa 2002. Anyway EA have ability to make good goal celebration cut scene. I very impresive with goal celebration from NHL 2002.

I've played WE6 a few times now (playing at a friend's house) I also play fifa series since 1996 ( I cant remember the title but its form EA ) What I have to say about Fifa2003 demo is what a step-forward it turns to be.

I know this game still cant compete with WE6 but watch out for the upcoming series. EA is certainly working to the right direction now and credit to them for after quite some times, they finally works on a football simulation. I heard they only had about 4.5 month to work on Fifa2003 and thinking of what a crap the WC2002 is, the 2003 is certainly a very good product. Another year, I think they could be matching WE6/pes series which is a good thing for us gamers.

....Since FIFA2003 is not out yet, so I assume that you meant the demo. Demo is a week old so is the time you've spent playing PES? I say not good enough time to dig into the game. Spend at least a month, no kidding. If you still dont like it its your lost.

Does it matter???

They're both games of football I believe.
That should be enough for comparison.
Even EA themselves compared FIFA2003 to PES.

And for the people who say FIFA2003's animation is better than WE6....

I've got a suggestion for you.

-Go play the game again.
-And if you get a chance to score.
-Watch VERY carelfully to the replay.
-Use your RAS to do a really slow replay and OBSERVE!!! every tiny bit of detail.
-Compare that to FIFA2003

I do understand how some people could call WE6's animations to be robotic. But its the overall feel of the game that make the game LOOK like a football game, football players.
Just like how many Japanese cartoonist does a great job in portraying an anime character's personality by illustrating just the right pose or movement. [sometimes using exaggeration, there's a word for all this... just can't remember -_- ]
Anyway, thats where the WE6 animation artist do a great job.

IMO FIFA2003 player models move more like a robot than WE6. Even the ball still have tendancy to move on its own at times.
All which is mainly due to the motion capture method EA makes use of for every release.

Also, the player body ratio is not still right. Better than 2002 but something just looks awkard compared to the rather skimpy looking WE6 players [at least they do not look awkward.. just skinny].

I just REALLY wish somebody in this forum would be able to create a video clip with both slow motion replays of WE6 and FIFA2003 side by side and let the people see for themselves what a true football game should look like.

Ok they way I see it theres a few possibilities here
a) your talking about the fifa2003 demo so yes to some extent I'd have to agree
b)if you're playing WE6 then your on the easiest difficulty setting or
c)you're lying, WE6 and PES defenders give you no room on harder difficulty settings and won't hesitate to take the ball off you if you just stand still.

Agreed PES commentary is crap, its about the only thing Konami Europe has complete control over but the commentary in WE6 is terrific.

Again if you were talking about FIFa2003 I'd say it was a bit harsh, crude and unpolished yes but not horrible.

Are you talking about fifa 2003 here?? If so, I totally agree with you.

No idea what grounds this statement is based on.

Seems its a specific aesthetic you're after, so yeah FIFA 2003 may be the better game for sitting and taking screenshots of, not much more though.

That's an excellent idea, like the videos that have a lap of Grand Prix 4 from the cockpit view side by side with a video of real F1 incar footage.

I'm sorry, if you think WE6 and PES have great animations and character models then I don't know what to say... I guess if you like the cheap (I mean artistic) japanese arcadey look that konami's been doing since the 80's more power to ya! I see prob's with FIFA's animations but nowhere near Konami's masterpieces.

As for why I don't think PES will improve much over the next year... look at the game for crying out loud! What do those character models have... 100 polys? If they want the game to take a step forward in terms of graphics, they're probably going to have to redo the whole game, since knowing the japanese it's probably an old inefficient hog of an engine pushed to the limit.

But look... all I pointed out before is, why the "Konami Kult" (tm)? Why jump on everyone who isn't fond of PES and WE6? PES et all aren't that good of games. It looks like it could be played on a palm pilot with the sounds to match. I said it had a more realistic feel to it in terms of gameplay.. I gave you that... but I also said they annoyed the hell out of me. That's not going to change by bashing "benny". It's really not

But you probably just looked at the demo to dislike it didn't you? It probably played differently didn't it? Well it goes both ways... I just don't see people who like the demo pouncing on you. In the ISS/PE forum, you never, never see a post saying Fifa vs PES. Why? We are secure enough in the game we play. We don't feel a need to reassure ourselves constantly about how good our game is. If you play it and you say you don't like it, you know what, too bad. Play Fifa and see if I care. But really Benny, you've really been talking about polygons, seems like you don't like PES/WE6 grafx more than the gameplay. But that is the most important thing to most FIFA players, grafx. How many topics in this forum are about grafx?

after 15 minutes on ISS 98, I felt exactly the same thing. But luckily I wasn't 7 years old and I knew real football when I saw it. So FIFA hit the dustbin and I've never wasted a cent on EA HIDEOUS misrepresentation since. FIFA2003 is also utter crap.

Konami's player models are near perfect. Any decent reviewer will agree.

I agree that previous versions of FIFA had large heads etc. And some do still. There's problems with the weighting still, yes. Have you seen Konamis models though? Those shoulders go down in a sharp V from the back of the very long neck resulting in shoulders much lower than they ever should. Also, they look like 80's arcade figures. They don't look like people! And the thing is... EA's got a game with high-end models, high-end stadiums good lighting AND smooth gameplay. It won't be long before they get it right. Konami's graphics will always be stuck in the 80's. But enough about that. I've repeated myself several times, but you don't like to listen. PES is NOT a good game. A good game doesn't annoy the crap out of you. You don't have to turn the sound off on a good game. You don't get revolted at the japanese "art" found in it. Reviews consist of many things that make a good game. I acknowledged that PES felt better at the moment. But there's not that much of a difference to have to put up with konami's cheap and annoying overall feel.

One more time. PES and WE6 are not good enough to achieve GOD status. It's got a market.. but it's not that good of a game. And it would need a complete reworking to become one. I'd look at FIFA becoming an excellent game next year. It's good now. I'd look at PES3 as being nearly identical to 2, which is nearly identical to PES. So there!

And saying FIFA 2003 is crap is truly being ignorant. It's on the pretty good - good - very good end of the spectrum. Look at the polls on the topic of is FIFA good? Most say it's fantastic, with it tapering down to almost non-existant by poor... then "oh my" it shoots back up when it's "this game is crap". Why's that?
