I think most of us already understand why the FIFA series has been so long in moving toward ultimate realism in the sport. This "impressions" article further underscores the fact that most of the market that EA caters to doesn't see the game like we do, and hence why FIFA is the way that it is. The paragraphs that comment on gameplay are the most telling.

Some selected quotes:

"Headers are extremely difficult to execute, and I have no clue how to do a bicycle kick." (emphasis mine)

"It’s as if they dumbed down the game a bit."

Enjoy...

"I do believe that FIFA 2003 is easier to pick up and play for people that have never played a FIFA title before"

Thats NOT what I wanted to hear. That means its as arcadey as its ever been, not realistic. You can't just start playing footie and be good straight away, but the FIFA series (and now it seems 2003) makes you do this straight away. Stupid.

Personally, I wouldn't put too much stock into that comment about FIFA 2003 being easier to pick up. It's just different - that's all. My feeling about the game is that yes, some areas are easier and some are harder, but for the most part, they are appropriately so.

Since he didn't specifically say what he thought was easier versus previous FIFA's, who's to say what that really means? I would strongly encourage you to try the game out for yourself - rent it or something first if you really have doubts.

My point in highlighting that article was to show what seems to be the "common" view of soccer games and why FIFA has evolved into what it is (i.e. closer and closer to sim) so slowly.
