Hi everybody,
the local shopping centre near me had 4 Xbox 360 pods with the full version of PES6 playable. I managed to play a couple of 10 minute games with a mate and would like to comment on the graphics and the playability. I DID NOT get a chance to look at the edit mode.
Playability:
To be honest, I did not see a large jump between PES5 and this. I did only play 2 games though. The main thing I noticed was that through-balls (along ground or lofted) were much better. I felt they were a bit hit and miss in PES5 but here you have far much control. The game certainly plays at a slower pace than PES5. I like it though - feels like you're in a lot more control and overall, it is definitely and improvement over PES5.
Still not impressed with the cpu-controlled AI though. In PES5, I found it irritating when the cpu-controlled players would take up stupid positions. I found that this has not really improved. You sometimes see defenders grouping together, following the ball when they should be picking up men. This really p*sses me off.
The referees are a lot more lenient this time round and doesn't blow the whistle every time you bump into a player. This is a relief as it allows the game to flow a lot more. However, when you make a foul and you're the last man, it is a guaranteed red card. I even gave a penalty away when my keeper slid out and took the man and not the ball!
Graphics:
Hmmm... This is where I'm not impressed.
First of all there are only 8 stadiums. No Emirates stadium, Stamford Bridge and there is a stadium that kinda looks like Old Trafford but definitely not the new expanded version. It's called Theatre Blanco - normally lisenced teams have the proper stadium names.
The ball selection is poor. They have a couple of Adidas balls which are good, the classic white with black patches ball and a whole selection of Reebok balls. The Reebok balls are very ugly and are in stupid colours.
The pitch textures are very nice - a huge improvement. The crowds look good too. Varied spectator designs so looked good.
Big disappointment was the kits. We've seen some great kits made for patches but the kits in this version have no textures to them and so don't look at all realistic. Very lazy by Konami's designers. Player likeness however is very good. All very recognisable. Only played with Man U and Barca tho.
Worst of all though is the sharpness of the graphics. These were displayed on 26" Samsung HDTVs that accompany all Xbox 360 pods (in the UK at least) and normally the graphics look amazing on these. However, on wide camera mode, the players seemed a bit fuzzy round the edges. Not what I'd have expected. Don't know if it was the display but they had other games on show there and they didn't look this bad.
Sound wasn't on so didn't get to hear the commentary.
Overall, I thought the gameplay was fantastic. Much tighter control and hugely enjoyable with a mate. Konami have improved the game in that respect. Graphically though, I wouldn't call this next gen - more like a 0.5 version if you know what I mean. If the rumours are true about the edit mode and with only 8 stadiums, the only reason to justify paying £50 for this is to play it on XBox Live. Otherwise, a patched PC version with HD kits will look MUCH better. I was tempted to get a 360 if this was really a step up, but it quite simply isn't. Hopefully, the PS3 version will take full advantage of the next-gen capabilities.
PC version for me then.
Hope this was a help. It is only my opinion so don't slate me for it.
