Poor Pauleta :-(

Ever since I watch Pedro Pauleta played for Portugal in World Cup 2002, I can't see how he can contibute to the Portuguese NT. Tonite's game was poor..no improvement at all. His 1st touch was poor, his instinct was even poorer. I still wonder why he is still the target man for Portugal.. Nuno Gomes by far a better player than him...

True, but not that much. He didnt have the right support. Balls given to him were so sh!t.. I can understand why he didnt do anything.

if you think Nuno Gomes is better than Pauleta you have absolutely no knowledge of portuguese football whatsover and shouldn't even had started this thread in the first place.

Well Pauleta has the excuse that he was in the middle of 3 greek center backs but he was extremely ineffective. Nuno Gomes was way more dangerous than Pauleta in the few minutes he played. Pauleta is a great striker but today he had a disapointing display. On the other hand you have to be fair and praise how the greek defense played. Thats also explains alot.

I think that Pauleta ain't the one to blame for Portugals loss.

If Vitor Baia had been playing and Deco would've started alongside C. Ronaldo, it would've been a different game.

Pauleta shouldnt play as a lone striker. That's completly nuts. If a defense is a tight like the Greek one today, then the lone striker is screwed.

Let's not blame Pauleta. You have to look at the midfield. The striker mainly depends on who's behind him ; with what kind of balls they feed him

How can you play Pauleta as a loan striker and with Greeces backline of 5 defenders ? how is he going to score goals ? Is he going to bribe the defenders to get past them ? thats just f*cked up ...

I agree 100%

That and Ricardo Carvalho for Couto

but it takes major balls to do such a move.

About Pauleta he was considered the french league player of the year when Ronaldinho was playing in PSG. That must have been a fluke

It's not that simple. With good attacking midfielders it's possible to get past a 5 man defence with just one striker.

Yeah i agree with you guys. It wasnt Pauletas fault but he didnt play that good. As always the player who needs to be supporting the striker (Rui Costa) was terrible. The midfield didn´t provide Pauleta with decent passes which is vital for a player like him who can´t hold the ball that well. The fact that Greece got the first goal, was also bad for Pauleta because he mostly a counter attack player. With good passes for fowards runs, Pauleta can use his pace and use his powerful shots. Since he didn´t have much game he didnt comply. But still he had a disapointing game.

there just wasn't any space today, Pauleta needed a lot more support which never came. Pauleta is better than Gomes overall, but in my opion he can be lazy at times.

We played a little better on the attack when we switched to a 4-4-2 styled formation without any DMs.

Pauleta is a great player, he was just off tonight. But I can't blame him for the loss as much as Collina and the linesmen(for the first goal), but hey, it happens, now we just gotta keep our heads up, retain any pride we still have from this defeat and march forth to the next 2 games.
