Portugese Midfield

I think it's quite possible that the Portugese National Team has probably one of the best midfields in the world.

Luis Figo, Rui Costa and Sergio Conceicao. Can you name a better 3-man combination?

Discuss!

Better 3 man combination??International or Club Level??

How about:
David Beckham
Ryan Giggs
Paul Scholes

Any team that boasts Figo and (particularly - cos I rate him as a better player than Figo) Rui Costa in the midfield is bound to have one of the strongest midfields in international football. Haven't seen Conceicao play enough to pass any sound judgement on his ability.

Figo, Rui Costa and S. Conceicao is better than Beckham, Scholes and Giggs, besides - Giggs plays for Wales and I said national team.

However, I did forget France's combination of midfielders - Pires, Zidane, Vieira (i think it might have been someone else but i cant remember who it was)

There's quite a few NT's that have great midfields nowadays, like Argentina (best football in the world IMO), Brazil, France, Italy, Holland, Turkey, etc etc..

Actually, if I was manager of Portugal, I don't think I would even start Figo right now to be honest. I think in recent times he's been more of a liability than an advantage. Besides, even though most people who don't follow Portuguese football don't beleive it, we actually have some young players that I think are almost ready to replace Figo on a permanent basis on the NT....players like Simao Sabrosa & Quaresma...and later Cristiano Ronaldo!

Conceicao also hasnt impressed me alot in that Portugal midfield.

The only thing I remember about Conceicao at international level was his hattrick against Germany in 2000(I think).

He does have pace and delivers alot of crosses for the big guys up front, but most of them are not accurate.

That is my opinion anyway.

Zambrotta - Totti - Gattuso/Tommasi - Doni

Zambrotta and Doni: two extremely fast wingers
Totti: the name speaks for itself
Gattuso/Tommasi: got to have some defensive balance

shinji...
Yes Simao, Quaresma and Ronaldo will all be very good, but your being a little tough on Figo, seems like your still mad from the WC.
Lately, Figo has been really impressing me, hes really helping out Real right now. Rui Costa is tearing up the Champion's League, and right now him and Fillipo Inzaghi are the best duo in the world (IMO). Conceicao isn't settled with Inter right now, once he gets back to a club in which hes comfortable at I think hell be doing better (He had an awesome game for Inter about 2 weeks ago but had a really bad one this (or last:confused: .) week. Now Portugal does have a bright future, but those guys are just good in the SuperLiga. Put Figo, Rui Costa, and Conceicao back in the Portuguese League and you might change your mind about Portugal's starting 11 ;)

Ya Vince thats a good midfield but overall I think that Portugal has the best midfield in the world. I'm not being biased or anything but Figo, Rui Costa, S. Conceicao, and now Viana is most likely the best national Midfield lineup. France is pretty even with us (Zidane, Viera, Pires, Wiltord) its debatable, but my vote is for Portugal :hump:

You still don't get it, Portugals midfield is good but not the best.

In my opinion, the worlds best 3 man combination(even though we use 4 or 5 midfielders)

Pablo Aimar
Juan Sebastian Veron
Andres D'Alessandro/Juan Roman Riquleme

The second best midfield in soccer is probably the Italian midfield, followed by the French, portuguese midfield, and then the Brazilians.

No SnYper you dont get it. Its my opinion, besides Veron barely even starts for Man U. And his time on the team will be cut shorter when Keane returns. Sorry man, you think what you want. I think the Portuguese and the French have the best midfield.

Hugo Viana ... will become one of the most influencial midfeilders over the next 2 years, i'll eat my socks if he proves me wrong ;)

I won't knock figo because he's world class. But your gonna say Viana or Rui Costa are by far a superior players compared to Riquelme or D'Alessandro. Do you even know who D'Alessandro is? As for Pablo Aimar, he already ranks on a level with Figo, Zidane, and Beckham. He carries Valencia on his back and he's only 23.

Bottom line is that Portugal's golden age of players is already passed their prime and not enough youth talent is coming through. Don't get me wrong, they'll still be a Top 10 team, just won't have the extra piece to be that top 5 team once Figo is gone.

Yes, Rui Costa is better than those 2. Riquelme has been disappointing in Barça. He and D'Alessandro are yet to prove their valour on the European football, and that is a FACT. Viana has still a lot to prove, too. Right now, I'd take Rui Costa over Figo, if I was to buy one of them.

Oh, and if calve11 doesn't know who D'Alessndro is, then that should say something about this player's reputation. Come on, everybody in Europe knew who Saviola was before he got here. His name preceeded him. ;)

Comparing Aimar to Figo, Zidane or Becks is just wrong and biased. Aimar's a talent, but he's still light years away from that lot. He's in great form, but so are Del Piero and Totti, and it's undeniable that these have been doing more to their teams than Pablito.

You started your sentence very well, but finished talking about what you don't know. I totally agree with you when you say that the "Golden Generation" already passed their prime - they're already slower, have less good games, and when 2004 arrives, they'll be even worse.
The problem is when you talk about our youth talent. I wonder how much you know to say something like that, unless your aim was simply to provoke us...
I am very optimistic and agree 100% with shinji when he says that we already have a few youngsters capable of replacing the Figos, R. Costas and João Pintos. Better yet, we have extremely talented kids for almost every single position on the field. Names like Simão Sabrosa, Ricardo Quaresma, Cristiano Ronaldo, Hugo Viana, Hélder Postiga, Tiago, Ednílson, Jorge Andrade, etc., may not say a lot to you, but they already do to the biggest European clubs: Juve, ManU, Barça, Milan, Inter, all of them are interested and expected to buy some of this kids on the next 1,5 years.

Finally, and answering the original question, I don't think Portugal has the best midfield right now. We had it back in 2000, when Figo, Rui Costa, Conceição and João Pinto were at their best, but that is over. Italy, England and Brazil have a solid, talented midfield, and I rate it above ours. Even Spain is probably better than us at the moment.
France will have to rebuild its midfield a little, and I don't see anyone stepping up to effectively replace Zizou. Argentina has good players, but after the WC fiasco they still have something to prove.
I hope that by 2004 we'll have again one of the best midfields ni the world. :)

Aww man, You were making such valid points and I was totally respecting your opinion until you said that about Portugal's youth :( That comment really revealed your ignorance about Portuguese football, but I still can't blame you for it, since it's no secret that Portuguese football get's almost no press, therefore it's no surprise that you're unaware of our youth talent...and probably won't be until they start playing in Italy and other big leagues around Europe. I doubt a lot of people would have beleived Rui Costa or Figo were going to be huge stars until after they left Portugal...

I also don't beleive our midfield is the best right now, I think it's still good, but we're sort of in a rebuilding stage right now...Anyways, if I said anymore I'd just be beating a dead horse since Infesta already said exactly what I was thinking.
