Problems playing modem to modem?

I have searched this forum for a solution to the above but have found none that can fix the problem.

Basically my friend and I can both stablish a connection and choose a team but after the game loads the team list it simply goes to a black screen and is frozen. It can not be exited, apart from using ctrl + alt + delete to end FIFA2003.

Has anyone been successful with modem to modem games. if so could you tell me what I can do to solve this problem.
