problems with graphicquality/fps ...

i bought fifa 3 days ago (i have every one since 96) and i must say i'm really disappointed ...

the gameplay seems great but the graphic quality seems less sharp and clear as in world cup 2002 and the game runs just not smoothly like the past versions (which would be understandable IF the graphics would be lot better....!) ..... i now run the game on 800x600, no anti aliasing or anisotrophic filtering (-> nvidia drivers) ...

this is a little better than 1024x... but still worse gameplaywise [think this depends on frames / seconds)] (and for sure graphics) than lets say world cup 2002 on 1024x plus 2x ani aliasing, which did run perfectly smooth...

there is a line to put in the soccer.ini that increased the graphics dramatically but then the game runs way to slow....

there has to be a way, this unsmooth gameplay just creeps me out!

system: athlon thunderbird 1400, geforce3, windows ME, 512 DDR

thanks in advance!

I have / had the same problem

I know exactly what you mean, and I know my reaction sounds technical strange. First, you have to apologize my English. I am from the Netherlands (AJAX Amsterdam is my favourite team).

My children have a PIII 600 Mhz and a GFORCE2MX and I have an ATHLON XP 2,1 Giga and a GFORCE4TI.On their system the game looks ok and the speed of the game is great. Twice as fast as all the earlier FIFA’s, I play it since the first. (Tell it to nobody but I am 35!) They play it at 800x600x16, normal details.

I started on my system at the same resolution. But I have the same problem as you have. The game isn’t smooth. I thought I had the answer. I disabled all the options from the driver (AA, …). You know the answer, it didn’t solve our problem.

Then I came in this forum and learned. I tried the “render every frame” option in the soccer.ini. Then the game runs smooth. But, indeed, the game speed is very low (even Bayern Munchen plays faster). So it doesn’t play half as good as on the system from my kids.

I installed five driver versions. And yes, this sounds strange, but after rebooting the system for the first time with a new driver, I can play the game with a good game speed on 1280x1024x32, high details. But sometimes after a half hour or so, or the next day, the players run as in a slide show. The frames / second seems to drop to less than 25.

Since I noticed this I always install the driver, disable all the options (AA, ..) and then I can play the game for at least a half hour on a good speed.

Gentlemen, I work 15 years with computers, but I have no idea what is wrong with our favourite game.

I also had this problem and i have a 2.2 P4 and GeForce 4 4600ti. I had choppy animation, even on 'low' setting's. If you add the line:

RENDER_EVERY_AI_FRAME = 1

You'll REALLY smooth out the animation. Some people say they have some 'slow-motion' on corner's and free kicks on goal with this line (add it to your soccer ini). I did, but i tried =2 rather than =1 and Voila, no more slow motion and MUCH better graphic's and gameplay now.;)

thank you guys!

ill try this line.... hmmmm maybe there will be ah patch cause this seems like a bug or something...

@ mauricetgol ... 1) you are never to old for playing games ;) 2) when i was in the netherlands i was working on slow motion too if you know what i mean :mrpimp:

i post if i find a resolution (i dont think buying a better pc is the real resolution ;) )

EA SPORTS/ FIFA 2003/Soccer ini

I'm at work right now so i'm going on memory, but i'm pretty sure it's the only ini file in the main Fifa 2003 folder. There are other ini files of course, but you've got to enter other folders to see em.

Just add it above the line:

AUDIO_SAFE_MODE=0

BTW, for those who feel this slow's the game down to much, go back and play WC2002 or FIFA 2k2 and compare. I did, and this feel's, play's and animates EXACTLY as good as those now. Peace.(H)

yeah it really improved !!! its much more smooth now ...

the graphics, well i still think they are better now but still less sharp than in WC 2002 ...

// 0 = fastest (unsynched or triple-buffered)
// 1 = unsynched
// 2 = synched
// 3 = triple-buffered
VSYNC_MODE = !?!?!?

what to choose there?!

( i have triple-buffered now)

Disable your USB mouse...

Thats what is causing your problems.....either go back to your PS2 mouse or use a USB - PS2 adaptor......dont laugh ..just try it....thats what caused problem with FIFA 2003 and the Game Iron cross on my System.....and its only an 800mhz with 266k memory...game runs like silk now.

Its the USB mouse

Just the USB mouse.......you will be blown away at the difference...I couldnt believe that a the background task for the USB mouse could have such a hold on my PC.....your Pc will come alive...I am sure Microsoft are aware of this...looked for a new driver on their website for the USB mouse that I have...(which I only purchased 3 weeks ago) the latest version of the driver is dated 09/99...!

you say that the usb connection is enough to slow the pc down? do you mean just the game fifa 2003 or in general?

ih yould adapt the mouse to ps2 (and then overclock the rate to 200Hz) which would be as good as usb but this is also not perfekt for performance i believe.......

I was blown away indeed, blown away that NOTHING HAPPENED when i reomoved my USB mouse and went back to my old one. The animation is very choppy, and on my rig, it should be like silk. The only thing that work's is adding the line. This is, IMO, is how the game should animate (just as smooth as previous versions). I wish i could see it running on somebody else's PC with similar specs as mine, because everybody has their own version of 'silky smooth'. I just want it to be as smooth as WC2002, and adding the line seems to be the only fix until a patch comes.

yeah, i think this usb thing was a system specific problem. hmmm an smoothness IS a subjective thing.... i like playing games with +70 fps (shooter with 100fps) und for me 40 fps or so is not much...

is it possible that the line with "2" chops a few animations? hmm ih like to believe that i sometimes see this chopping cause it doesnt renders one of the animation frames.. maybe imagination

I agree. And it's not your imagination, i see the minor 'skip' of a frame here and there, but it is still nearly flawless with =2 instead of =1. The =1 setting was great untill all the players were bunched togher like on a corner, but i just don't have that anymore sine i changed it to =2. This game is beautifull!

render every frame =2?

Good morning gentlemen,

I am back at my work, so I have the time to read your post. ;)
I did a fresh Windows XP install, and yes, the game was smooth for two days.
I don’t know what happened, but it is the same old problem. The smoothness is gone.

I noticed that the refresh rate changed. I don’t know what it is; I had disabled the vsync option in the driver tab. But is it possible that FIFA overrides that option? It must be something like that. I tried my old solution and installed an driver. I went back to the 28-nvidia drivers and for more than an hour the game is smooth! I don’t know how long it will last.

So I am going to try your solutions.

Am I right that you changed the line: render every frame = 2?

Did it solve our problems?
I am going to try this tonight.

Gentlemen thanks for your suggestions.

Hi guys, after reading these posts, I added the line that schils said would improve the jerky frame rate. I experimented with it try 1 and 2 but I found that everything was slo mo although the smoothness was better. I then tried the line with 0 and to my surprise it worked like a dream, as there is no jerkiness anymore. So to anyone who has amazing specs (like me) and has this problem I would recommend you experimenting with the ini file.

Schilis, can I ask you how you found this out - where you messin around or did u know what u were doing? Anyway cheers guys!

render every frame =0?

You add the line: render every frame = 0?
Did this solve the problem?
Is the gameplay speed fast?
Anyone else tried this?

I am wondering if EA sports knows our problem.
Do they read this forum?
Did anyone mail them?
