here's what I do
I use an attack-minded 3-4-3 with my central forward slightly behind the other strikers...
Anyways, I use short passes to get down the field, and when any of my forwards are in a position to take on 1 or 2 defenders, I use the through pass and then shoot it right in - if that doesn't work, I use a regular pass, then use the R1 button to make the defenders dizzy, then blow right by them.
If all else fails, going down the flanks isn't a bad idea either - although the cross in FIFA has been dumbed down a bit, it's still easy to score with it - you just have to remember not to cross too late or else the keeper will always collect.

I did win 11-1 on world class level you donkey, & i'll be happy to do it again. & i did it on regular time, which is more than enough since you can score a few seconds after kickoff by dribbling all the way forward & scoring. Yeah, i admit i did not score in a 'realistic' way using good passing but just dribble all the way, but if i am allowed to do that in the game the game itself must is unrealistic.
Anyway fifa is so crap no one cares anyway. Just because you can't win doesn't mean other people can't, you loser.
Anyway, if your aim is not to score, how did you win your matches? By some ugly methods I suppose ...

and finally 9 shev rulz, dude... i never answer your question :P sorry, let´s see, i would recomend:
1- VERY IMPORTANT....you should use the formation that best suits you, i would say a 4-4-3 is a god base for starting. Hint: use one of de defenders as a sweeper, he will make harder the way to goal to the computer offense. Try to use a defensive midfildier (one of them should be lower than the others).
why is this important? because the game is pretty realistic....is not like old games when the formation was just an option for nothing. here it matters! You can see it with the radar, the players will stay in their position (except they are actually with the ball or u send them to run or whatever). My case: i played 5 times against australia using uruguay, lost the 5 games! frustrating...because any corner for the computer end it in goal

2- some one said before....make NO MISTAKES....try to don´t lost the ball when is in ur posesion, think before pass.
3- use the "chanfle" botton, to change the direction, thats the R2 and L2 i n gravis game pad. works pretty well.

other advice..... if u use powerfull teams such as ac milan, bayern, manun, argenitina, brazil...... it would be A LOT easier....
just noticed....caus i always use costa rica, uruguay, and not strong teams..... but just used argentina and well way to different!

High passes to the wings
I prefer just a high pass to the right/left attacking midfielder. Then the ball is at the other side and you can pass to the middle for some 1on1 moments. Shooting is easy. Passing is a little bit more difficult, but when you pass good, you play good.
