Proper technique for shooting the ball?

Hamilton

Youth Team
I notice when I shoot the ball usually it never really goes where I want it to :((((

I never really had much formal football training so I was wondering if anyone could inform me about the proper technique to shooting the ball.....

I know a few basics like if you're right footed you want your left foot to be a foot to the left of the ball before you strike... and your supposed to bend your knees but other than that I really am not sure about some things like what part of the foot to strike the ball with (top of laces? closer to the toe?)....

Any help would be much appreciated... thanks :)

Line up about 5 yards behind the ball, and about 1 yard to the left, so you are slightly diagonally back.

Accelerate towards the ball, taking small quick steps, on the balls of your feet. They can get slightly larger as you reach the ball, but try to keep them small -- quicker = more power, and you will be able to place your last step without losing speed.

Left foot planted about 6-10 inches to the left of the ball. It should be "beside the ball", but can be adjusted forward and backwards to change the angle of your shot (back = higher, because it makes you lean back/laces moving up when striking).

'Lock' your toe down, so you have a hard striking surface. Hit it with your 'laces'. Not youre actual laces, depending, but with the highest, hardest part of your foot. Just on the left edge of your laces, unless you wear Nike or Predator boots.

Focus purely on the ball. See your target, first, then do the run up, plan, and try to hit an extremely small, specific point (imaginary or not) on the middle of the ball.
This is arguably the most important part of any soccer technique. Don't leave it up to chance.

Swing all the way through towards your target (with strength/practice, you ill actually lift your whole body off the ground with the force of the run-up coming together with the force of the kick.

There's lots of more, but those are the main basic steps.
Wrote that quickly, as I'm rushing off. I'll answer any questions, or things that need clarifying, if you want.

Good luck!

Aim to put your foot through the ball as opposed to under it. Otherwise you'll get a bit too much height on it.

just punt it as hard as you can.... :mrpimp:

tho this can have very bad side effects such as a broken toe ;)

I can strike the ball pretty well, with both feet. My secret?, i was on the field everyday taking shots , even if they were horrible at the begining, i later acquire the strenght on my feet to place the ball where ever i want.;)

i've developed a tottaly different method of kicking the ball.

Its really weird, i still have some power, but i use a lot more curve and placement.
whenever i try to put tons of power on a ball, it ends up either being shanked, or lobbed over the ball.

i get my knee over the ball and everything, but it doesn't seem to help

Yeah, that's a totally different style.

I strike the ball mostly with the outside/top of my feet (not with the toes). This gives the ball alot of power and precision. If i want to make a lobbed pass, i strike the ball with the same part except alittle more to the side. Giving the ball more spin effect.

Is shooting the ball with your toes a bad thing????? because from what I have seen this gives the ball more power and speed. Of course most of the time direction and aim is lost.

Yes, it has more power but it usally goes straight. Ever tried doing a Roberto Carlos type free-kick? We're you curl it the other way.

I like to hit the ball slightly to the side of centre as I prefer to place shots and put curl and spin on the ball rather than smash it. For times when I want power (like long-range) I hit slightly to the top of the ball to ensure it stays down.

Go find a wall and a ball and practise for a while :D

a wall is fine if you want to ruin your ball.

hey that rhymes!!(H)

But i've got a beutiful adidas silver starfinder. and i couldn't stand it if it got scratched. So i guess i could use a piece of **** ball i found at the park:D

Try leaning into your shot to keep it low. Its a great way to get tons of power on it but still get it on target.

the main point to shoot the ball with power is to hit the middle part of the ball using the top and little left side (this mean the place the bone leading to the big toe) of yr foot if u r right footed, vice versa.

if u hit the ball in the middle part, the ball does not spin and the ball goes straight like R. Carlos does. becareful not to hit the ball in the lower part or the ball will be caught by a spectator behind the goal. :p
