PS2 FIFA 08 framerate issues

I have FIFA08 on my PS2 and I find the framerate to be atrocious. It doesn't matter what camera angle I use, it's always bad and at times, not unplayable, but very annoying. I don't know if it's struggling to render the graphics or if it's having issues with streaming audio off the DVD. Maybe there's something wrong with my PS2's DVD player?

Anyone else experienced this?
