question about the shooting...

don't immediately think this is a stupid question but could someone tell me how the shooting exactly works ? Sure, i scored some goals, from inside or outside the box, but when i view the matchstats after the game approximately 30 % of all shots go between the post. I found out then we you reach the red part of the bar the ball almost always goes next to the goal, but i've shot on goal when my bar was all green and even then the ball goes over. Should one press the shoot button and the choose a direction or the other way around or....

hope someone can clarify this for me
