Question of the Week: Players who messed up their careers

Pogba4Now

Team Captain
Everyone who transferred to Liverpool.

Keegan

Yardie
Michael Ricketts (who?)

He started his Bolton career in impressive style, scoring 24 times as Bolton won promotion to the Premier League through the playoffs. His finest moments at Bolton Wanderers include sealing victory against Preston North End in the Division One Play Off Final in 2001 and scoring the winning goal at Old Trafford in a 2-1 win for Bolton over Manchester United in the 2001–02 Premier League season. Ricketts continued scoring in his first season in the Premier League, hitting 15 goals by February, and this form led to his call-up for England's friendly against The Netherlands in February 2002. In January 2003, Middlesbrough spent £3.5 million to sign him from Bolton. He failed to recapture his goal-scoring form, netting just four times in 38 matches. It got worse, including being released by PNE for being overweight and beating up his ex-girlfriend.

He had 26 and 28 goals in 40 games in each of his last 2 seasons with Milan, so I wouldn't say he was on the decline either. Chelsea has a knack for ruining careers though, as per Az's mention of SWP (H)
I agree about SWP but I generally thing Shevschenko lost that yard of pace due to physical reasons and that he would have declined that season whether he had stayed at Milan or not, even though older players find Serie A easier. It was just a bad buy.

Yeah, Ronaldo would never count for anything bad in my eyes. Messi, Maradona and Pelé had and will have a bigger career in the end, but pound for pound (no pun intended) Ronaldo will always be my best player of all time.

I think one can make an argument that his one year at Barca (and probably his year at PSV too, but I don't know anything about it) was the best any player has ever played for a full season. The problem is that he was never the same after that breakdown he had before the world cup final. But my god, this highlight package looks like someone playing FIFA on the easiest setting.

Yeah, I was 6/7, I was starting to really get into football and seeing him was almost magical, maybe that had also to do with it.

Ronaldo too to an extent. He was just so talented it took longer.

Ronaldo won the World Cup and the Champions League and played a significant part in winning a lot of titles with the various world class teams he played for. Looking at these facts you can never call his career messed up then, I think. No matter what.

Same goes for Ronaldinho, as far as that goes.

But it is true that both could've had even better careers, if they had done things differently and (mostly in Ronaldo's case) weren't as injury prone.

Ronaldo didn't win the Champions League though, he was ineligible to play in Europe for Milan in 2007 after his transfer.

Was he not part of the side that beat Leverkusen? Think he might've come just a few months later if he didn't.

He led Brazil to 2 World Cups, **** the CL.

****, forgot they lost in '98. Still, led them to 2 WC finals and won one of them. **** the CL (slightly less).
