Question of the Week: Playoffs

theo

VII
recently, the Romanian Football Federation decided that the league should reduce the participant teams number down to 14 and also opt for a playoff format due to a series of issues such as low attendances, mediocre level of football, lack of commercial appeal and across-the-board financial problems.

I personally think it would be a good idea, this way it gives small clubs a reason to play for once they save themselves from relegation. cutting down to 14 teams was also necessary seeing as more than half of the clubs have financial issues, getting rid of some dead wood is nice for a change. it can be a bit unfair though if you finish first after the season and end up losing the title in playoffs but that's the point of it I guess, entertainment-wise.

but do you think it is a viable system however, especially for weaker leagues? did it help improve the championships in Belgium and Netherlands?

It can be entertaining. My issue of it is I don't like how the team that fought all season for the number one spot gets screwed over.

Or a team can be shit all season and time a lucky run and win the league

They're fun until the league decides that more than half the teams should get in (*cough*MLS*cough*).

I don't think any system is inherently better, but this one is definitely more exciting and how you finish is entirely in your hands.
