Question to the Dutch

I have a History teacher who keeps insisting that whe shouldn´t clall Netherlands 'Holland', because Holland is a province of Netherlands (the main one, but still not the entire country).
So, out of curiosity, do you Dutch really mind with that, or Netherlands=Holland?

This example should answer your question.
With the football (Euro2004) that's going on now all the scarfs, flags say "Holland" and not "Nederland" and dutch supporter always use the word "Holland" in their chants, "Nederland" is hardly ever used.

There is no province in Holland called Holland although there are "Zuid-Holland" and "Noord-Holland". So you can tell your teacher that you are allowed to call The Netherlands Holland.

There's a thread about this somewhere on this forum already, by the way.

Phil is right. When it comes to chanting we always use the word Holland. However if you were to ask me where I'm from I would probably say The Netherlands. The word Holland is mainly used in relation to any sporting events so to speak. The real, official, geographical name so to speak for the country is however The Netherlands. So your teacher is right. Albeit the fact that there are two provinces with the name Holland.

Most people here in the States look at me awkward when I use the Netherlands. There's a short pause and I say Holland and they'll go: "Ooooooh, okay. Holland. I see."

And in relation to the Dutch NT, we use "Oranje" which refers to the color orange.

I personally dislike calling Netherlands Holland cause this way you say that only the west part of the Netherlands is dutch. So your teacher is indeed quite right.

Yes it's the main area where all hapens the rest is all farm. But yet farmers aren't lesser beeings so you should count them amongst the Dutch.

Well, I don't care much about it I'm a Hollander and a Dutchie at the same time

(:/)

There are smaller cities in the other areas where some stuff happens. Not much, but a tiny little bit of stuff...

Nothing compared to the 4 bigger cities though...

:(
