For sigs and stuff just keep it at 72 dpi which is the average screen resolution. If you want to change the dpi for a pic for the internet or printing I recommend that you have 'Resample Image' turned off. If it's turned on and you change the dpi then the picture will get really big and the quality will dip dramatically.
Really, you don't have to worry about the dpi for sigs and stuff. The dpi affects the image mainly by you telling it how many pixels you want to :drevil: cram :drevil: into every inch. A higher dpi means that more pixels from the picture are divided into each inch and therefore is better quality. A really low dpi, lets say it was a dpi of 1 then that means from that picture one pixel will be in each inch which will mean the picture will be ultra blocky and look crap.
You only really need to worry about dpi when it comes to printing though. I was tought that a dpi of at least 130 is acceptable for printing pictures, anything below that will be really bad quality.

So bottom line - there's no point in changing the dpi for sigs. It's only important for printing.

Very simple...

72dpi is used for web graphics or basically anything that is to be displayed on a screen, be it monitor or TV...

300dpi is used for print press. If you just want to print something to your printer, don't bother but stuff such as promo posters, flyers, cards, magazines are all made in at least 300dpi or higher.

note: dpi = dots per inch

The higher the dpi the better the image quality and the sharper the picture. In the world of press printing it is certainly not unusual to be working with 200MB (that's right, 200MB) JPG images!
