There's another important factor I forgot to add that explains why Portuguese teams have been havnig poor performances lately.
As you know, Portugal will host Euro2004 and we're building/recycling 10 stads for it. Sporting, FC Porto and Benfica are building totally new stadiums, each one costing over 100 million €. They will have to pay around 80% of that value, while Boavista's new stadium is a bit less expensive.
On top of that, both Porto and Sporting have new top notch training facilities, which didn't come cheap either.
All this put together means that there's no money to spend on great players, so I see us going through a bad moment on UEFA competitions on the next years...
