"Red Bull takes over U.S. MetroStars

VIENNA, March 9 (Reuters) - Having bought a Formula One team and an Austrian soccer club, energy drink firm Red Bull has expanded its sports empire by acquiring U.S. Major League Soccer club, the MetroStars, the company said on Thursday.

The team will change its name and compete in the 2006 season as Red Bull New York, Red Bull said in a statment.

"Our goal is to further strengthen the team and position the New York Red Bulls as the soccer metropolis of the East Coast," Red Bull chief executive Dietrich Mateschitz said.

The firm also aims to "join the investment for a new tailor made soccer stadium - the 'Red Bull Arena' - which will serve as the new home for the New York Red Bulls".

The acquisition would provide Red Bull's other soccer club, Red Bull Salzburg, with a sister club in the United States, it said.

"Close collaboration between Red Bull Salzburg and Red Bull New York is planned. Synergies in athletic areas as well as in management and marketing will be tapped," Red Bull said.

"Projected plans include talent scouting, mutual training camps and friendly matches as well as joint marketing, merchandising and public relations activities," it said.

A Red Bull spokeswoman declined to say how much Red Bull was paying for the MetroStars.

Salzburg are second in Austria's top league. Red Bull New York will play their first game of the season against D.C. United on April 2, Red Bull said. "

Gay. Did they really have to change the team colors? Changing the name of the team is not enough?

I mean, I'm all for getting new money into the league, but damn do they have to erase the entire history of the club like they did with Austria Salzburg?

What Red Bull are doing is actually very clever. They will now have the ability to manipulate what a potential 30,000 (Not sure what Metrostars capacity is) drink, eat and see in the way of advertisements. I can't imagine anything other than Red Bull adverts on the advert boards and obviously on the shirts.

Crazy but as DMB said, did they really have to erase the clubs history?

The funny thing is that Red Bull New York is actually a better name than "MetroStars". I mean, it's not like they renamed the team Vagisil New York. But it's still got to suck for the hardcore Metro fans.

I agree this is a smart move by Red Bull. Hopefully they will really push to expand the Metro fanbase, because it's going to help them in two ways: making more money from attendance and making more money from pushing their product.

Haha, don't feel bad. It's just how sports work in America. Teams move all the time and change their color schemes to whatever is popular.

I dunno but anything that can make us a better soccer team would do for me. Sure i'll miss the metrostars.
But honestly, they canceled team history? What history?
