As you'll notice, English is based on a great variety of old languages. All the short words come from the basic languages like Celtic and Scottish and a little bit of Welsh. However, the long words such as sophisticated came from Latin when they invaded in the time of Julius Ceaser, although he actually failed and the invasion that actually seceeded was spearheaded by the spasticated(genuinaly was) claudius.
English also has other influences like French from the 1066 invasion. In fact, that was the last ever succesful invasion of our isles, we're close to going a 1000 years without being invaded.
Studying both Latin and Ancient Greek at my school i can see that this language hasn't really been influenced by these, so again u ask, wtf is this language based on?
EDIT: It could actually have Latin routes but i can't see them.
