Round 1: O'Leary vs Kewell

Looks like O'Leary still has it in for Harry at the moment, I just read this on the BBC site:

"There are definitely going to be a few players going out in the summer to freshen it up," said the Leeds boss.

And O'Leary questioned the commitment of some of his own players compared to the likes of Arsenal's Robert Pires and Ryan Giggs of Manchester United.

"I would like some of our players to have that hunger and not go about thinking 'we are good players' when they haven't done anything yet."

Hmm.. what player is like Pires and Giggs at Leeds?

Do you think O'Leary is right to publicly criticise his players?

I remember Beckham saying he didn't like the way Glen Hoddle handled the players when he was in charge of England, and this seems similar to me. I'm just wondering if O'Leary's approach is partly to blame for their form.

O'Leary is still relatively inexperienced, and so is the Leeds squad.

The difference between Leeds and Newcastle is that some Newcastle players, such as Shearer and Speed, and probably Solano and Robert, and probably Acuna and Dabizas have won titles before joining Newcastle.

Batty has won titles at Leeds (92) and Blackburn (95), along with Wilcox. Otherwise only Dacourt (Lens 98) as had any experience of winning championships.

Leeds need some more players with championship experience, such as Effenberg who stated that he'll leave bayern Munich at the end of the season.

Arsenal and Man Utd have title experience, even most of the new signings have a successful track record. Liverpool are pretty close behind.

he should learn things from wenger and fergie... don't ever publicly criticise their own players... do that at close door... if you do that it will definitely affect the team performance...

Yes, it is out of order to criticise players out of school and very un professional, but it also seems to be a case of the team loosing the plot, and young legs against experience and if O'leary can some how settle things down and manage to blend the two he would then be on his way to fixing up most of the problems that Leeds are facing at the moment. And of course Brian Kidd is being made the scapegoat by some of the more ferral followers due to his past ties with Man Utd and yet Kidd has the full support of the Leeds squad. And would you really think that O'leary will be too worried about the ravings of the few ferral Bar Room experts who travel around following the team. The Woodgate-Bowyer troubles could have had a major part in the current situation too. Although it has been denied by statements from the Leeds officials which is what can be expected from the Pr droids. Leeds have a very good squad that should have the guts and the willpower to get all this behind them and then pick it all back up next season.

Is it 'inexperience' or is it merely that O'Leary is a mediocre manager? (probably both)

I mean what has he really done here that other managers, if given the millions (what is it like close to 100 million quid?) that O'Leary was given, couldn't do much better? I don't even think many of the top teams in Europe have spent as much as Leeds United have in the past few years.

I mean how would O'Leary do if he was given very limited funds? If we switched John Gregory, or Alan Curbishley, or George Burley's current jobs with O'Leary's I'm sure all three of those managers would do a much better job than O'Leary has.

Hell, give Burley half the money that Ridsdale has given pig nose and Ipswich would be challenging for the title. Even amongst the top tier teams in England, I am almost certain Arsene Wenger's net spending during his time at Arsenal is MUCH less than O'Leary's. Same for Houllier.

Of course both those manager's have much greater experience so then is it really Peter Ridsdale's fault for giving a moron his checkbook?

50% of one, half of the other? :)

As for the off-field antics, well the media circus is mostly O'Leary's fault with the brilliant timing of his book "Leeds United ON TRIAL" which, he said, had nothing to do with the trial. If I was Ridsdale that would have been it for me, O'Leary would have been out for making such a stupid move, and yet Ridsdale jumps in with his own wierd comments.

yes i must admit that with the amount of money given to o'leary he should at least win something by now...

most players he's brought are inexperienced and resists buying 27-30 year olds who are at the peak of their careers. I mean Ferdinand the captain? Ferdinand is still relatively young, he still has a lot of learning to do, and he isn't that sort of player who'll is a natural leader (like Adams). Van Bommel i can't see joining Leeds, and would make little difference, Effenberg, yes, he's the sort of midfielder who'll control the game, thats what Leeds lack at the minute, and he should be given the captaincy, as others will look up to him.

Starting XI
Leeds are young team and I think they need someone at the helm who is experienced, someone they can learn from. I think O'Leary is learning at the same time as his players, which can't really work.

Leeds need some kind of a leader on the pitch as well. I am not sure who fits Leeds and the EPL, who is on the move.

I think O'Leary should try to keep Kewell as much as he can as Harry is a real talent, and is still rather young and can still develop a greta deal. Kewell I believe is one of the most class acts in the world when in form, and knowing that you have the managers support helps that, I think O'Leary is wrong.

I can think of the following players who maybe be moving in the summer to the Premier League

Effenberg
Van Bommel
McManaman (unless he decides to see out the remainder of his contract)
Hofland

they kept on saying that leeds is a young team but they should have been more mature now as they have already played in the CL last season and still they seem to lost their way during crucial matches...

Well Leeds won today, thanks to a magnificent quality goal by the leathal Robbie Fowler.

(I'm being sarcastic about describing the goal - it was flukey)
