Russia v Wales [P] + [R]

Wtf are Russia smoking. I reckon they are obviously a bit afraid of being beaten by Wales after all their bravado since the draw was made, and we put up more of a fight in Russia than they expected. They were trying to get Giggs off one way or another throughout the game and the 'elbow' claim is ridiculous. It took the bloke about 10 seconds to act stunned and fall on the floor. I hope that UEFA turn around and tell Russia that they were the unsporting and cheating team and that if they aren't careful it is their players that will be banned.

Knowing how UEFA have treated Wales during the qualifiers though, and the fact that Russia are considered a bigger team and we all know how much UEFA like to pimp themselves out to the bigger teams, they'll ban him... Just to improve Russia's chances.

The Red Devil
Giggs free to face Russia
Tuesday, 18 November 2003

Welsh international Ryan Giggs can play for his country in tomorrow night's UEFA EURO 2004™ play-off second leg against Russia at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Disciplinary charges
However, the Manchester United FC winger will subsequently have to answer a UEFA disciplinary charge of improper conduct in Saturday's first leg in Moscow. UEFA today studied video evidence in the wake of allegations that Giggs had elbowed a Russian opponent. The case will be heard by UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body on 4 December.

Legal principle
Under UEFA rules, it is a fundamental principle that a person charged must be able to state his case in writing before any decision is taken. Consequently, due to time constraints, no decision could be made before Wednesday's match, and Giggs will be eligible to play.

Russian charges
At the December disciplinary hearing, the Football Union of Russia will also face charges related to the setting off of fireworks and throwing of missiles by spectators at Saturday's game. The first leg ended in a goalless draw, and the winners of tomorrow night's return leg will go through to the EURO 2004™ finals in Portugal next summer.

i believe the ban includes friendlies and euro2004. i may be wrong. but i do believe that, say if he's given a 3 match ban, he'd be entitled to miss the next three matches, whether friendlies or competitive.

but i swear, if he is banned, there really is no justice.

According to today's Western Mail, any ban would have to be for competitive matches rather than friendlies, and so it would be during Euro 2004.

It also says, though, that a charge of improper conduct usually results in a nominal fine rather than a ban.
