I would rather the evil bastard rot in prison. Although he's allowed visitors so he'd commit crimes anyway, so yeah....hang the ****er.

I heard he could appeal.

Then i heard that appealing in Iraq isnt quite what it's made up to be in the US and UK, all they do is make sure all procedures in the court have been followed precisly, not the case perse.

The official sentence is that he is to be hanged, though he would prefer to face a firing squad, so maybe he will be able to get that changed on appeal.

Any death sentence (or life inprisonment) in Iraq generates an automatic appeal, but as Tom said, this isnt like Western appeals and therefore the verdict is very unlikely to change. It will, however, delay it by several months.

I have mixed feelings about this. There is no doubt in my mind that he is guilty of the crimes of which he was accused and, although I don't agree with capital punishment, those crimes certainly warrant the most severe punishment a court can hand down. However, in the recent past and right now, there are other world leaders who have committed far worse atrocities than he ever did, were far worse for their countries and their people, yet they are still in power and living in peace and untried. Kim Jong-Il, Robert Mugabe, President Niyazov etc. Why should justice be purely dependant on whether the US feel like doing something about it?

Saddam Hussein was one of many world leaders who were tyrants and abused their power to horrendous ends, he just happens to be the one that the US have chosen to unseat, and as a result left his country in a far worse state than when he was in charge. Reading about the current sectarian divisions, it is an absolute wonder that Saddam managed to keep control the way he did, did he manage this through the methods for which he is now on trial? If so, did these methods prevent more deaths and violence?

I suppose I wouldnt be happy with any outcome really, what else could they have done? It would have been an outrage if he had walked free, or been let off extremely lightly, and life imprisonment would have been exactly the same really. No, the court did reach the right verdict, it just leaves a rather sour taste in the mouth.

Look, I don't believe in the death penalty, but I'm not going to shed any tears for this cock.

I don't know about the UK, but isn't that precisely what appellate courts in the US do? They basically make sure that the trial itself was legit.

sorry, i really dont know the ins and outs of it, i just know over here we get a lot of appeals and the sentence is almost always cut (however meaninglessly)

Fact is though that Iraq was a rather stable country when he was still in control. Two of the three community's within Iraq were suffering. Now all are suffering and the country is in a complete civil war, which will go on for years if you ask me.

Sentenced to death, who didn't see that coming. But for the verdict to be issued just 2 days before the US mid-term elections, now that's something else. Seriously these neo-cons have no shame, banking on something like that for short-term political gain, without sparing a moment to consider how their decisions will impact on others, or what ramifications they'll have in the more distant future.

But I share the view that Saddam should've been thrown in a jail cell and left to rot there for ever. I hear Abu Ghraib prison has great accommodation and offers very nice retirement packages.
I can still understand the Iraqi government's eagerness to do away with him as quickly as possible, specially with the country being so unstable and many Saddam supporters more than willing to fight to free him or even bring him back to power. And more importantly this will finally offer some sort of justice and bring closure to the millions of his victims and their families.

Instead of hanging though I would've preferred to see something more dramatic, like stoning to death, where each Iraqi citizen would get to throw one stone at him and they'll all get a turn even after he's dead. Or maybe use one of those ancient Chinese torture methods, like how they used to slice open a prisoner's flesh while he was all tied up and cut up his limbs while he was STILL ALIVE so that he could feel the full effect of the pain.
Or maybe i've just been watching too many violent horror flicks for my own good.

But whichever way he dies, he can count on having a sexy hot date waiting for him when he does.
