But they happen all the time in real life so why shouldn't it happen in the game every now and again?

Long shots are crap? Jay what are you on about?

Beckham Scored from Halfway Line, Xavi Alonso scored from 55 odd yards and Jose Luis Chilavert (A Paraguay Keeper) scored from inside his own half from a freekick so it does happen every so often....

Thomas Gravesen has scored from own half before too, with the danish national team, think it was against Romania
