@ Shifty, Bobby etc...: Regarding roads in U.S.

Well, I've been reading some stuff about American Suburbia for my uni course, and one of the pictures posted by Shifty in the Member Photo Thread got me thinking...

One of central themes in the course has been a persistent anti-urban slant in federal funding for roads, transit etc. throughout most of the 20th century.

So my question is: Do you know anything from the news, internet, Bush & Obama administrations etc. in regards to this subject?

Most of the roads are under State control, not Federal control so the Presidential administrations wouldn't have much to do with them. Obviously they do get some Federal funding for the Interstates and whatnot, but most of it's handled within the State government.

In North Carolina at least the roads are an extremely political subject as the capital is in Raleigh and a good deal of Statewide figures come from the Eastern part of the state (where Raleigh is), Charlotte (NC's largest city) and the other western cities feel as if they get the short end of the stick in regards to road money, an example is out "outer belt" (officially Interstate-485). We've been promised for years and years that the State of North Carolina will finish it, but it's still incomplete and in the meantime towns like Fayetteville and New Bern -- which, and I mean them no disrespect, aren't really major cities -- have seen their road projects receive a boost in funding. Coincidentally the Governor is from New Bern, and the ex-head of State Transportation is from greater Fayetteville.

Several western NC bridges are also "in dire need" of repairs of they risk complete collapse.

So, yea, I guess you could call that anti-urban. Fayetteville is basically a giant army base and New Bern a port, while Charlotte is the center of a metropolitan area.

Yea, it's pretty sprawled out. That's why we need 485, it doesn't do anything but run a ring around Charlotte proper to make it easier for people out there to get to the CBD, most of those people have never been anywhere else in Charlotte, they just take the interstate into town and out.

I honestly have no idea how federal, or even state, funds are distributed for highways. Sorry I can't help, but I could care less about local politics, so you can imagine how little I care about stupid bull**** like federal monetary contribution to urban streets.

Wasn't part of Obamas plan to create jobs by providing funding to states and states to cities for building highways?.. Anyhow, My city can't finish construction on one 1 mile section of road, god knows what would happen if government was involve in that. Also, There is a section that connects L.A city to the outer parts of it (Anaheim) that goes from three lanes to five lanes, maybe goverment can get involve on that and increase some lanes and reduce travel time by a few hours.

I drove from Milwaukee to Carlos*sonville around Halloween and noticed highway construction in some southern states with signs that said it was funded by the stimulus. Around Louisville was one place and I think Nashville was another.
