Should EA stick to North American sports?

FIFA is EA Sports big cashcow though. The NBA Live, John Madden Football and NHL Hockey series seel really well here in the States but the sales overseas are pretty minimal compared to many of their other non-sports titles. FIFA on the other hand brings in more money world wide than all their sports titles put together. I was trying to find the link to the interview pre-FIFA 2003 release where their marketing guy said that but Gamespot have removed it.

If EA Sports don't make FIFA 2004 the bomb then it's game over. A lot of the funding for EA's other games come from their sports titles. Sims aside, I don't think EA have had any huge successes world wide. I know they lost a huge amount of money from that game which was supposed to be x-files real-time style. If you suddenly lose a huge proportioon of your profits because people aren't buying your main game anymore it's gonna have a big impact on EA.

The thing is, EA need to restructure and get serious. Soccer is where the money is becasue every country in the owrld wants a decent soccer game and up until now unless you were on Konami's target list you had to make do with FIFA. Now the scenario is changing and we're in a year where everybody will have access to the Konami titles. Konami have said in a few recent interviews that they are reviewing their contract with Sony and looking to go multi-format with PES3 on it's release. They know they can make more money from multi-platform release then they can from Sony's extra payments for exclusive release.

Ea are screwed becasue I genuinely don't think they have the ability to challeneg Konami. Years and years of FIFA titles and we still have people saying they love FIFA 98 more than any other FIFA title and a new thread started today with a number of people saying they enjoyed FIFA 2002 more and were going to re-install that.

One thing you don't get with Konami's titles is rollbacks to previous titles. Every Konami release is the greatest soccer game ever until the next one comes out.

I think ISS3 will be a HUGE success on the PC. I've played ISS2 quite a bit now on the Playstation One and even with poor graphics the gameplay is just so near perfect. Add great graphics to that and a further improvement in gameplay and the only people who will be playing FIFA 2004 are people who download it.

I guarantee you there will be more people downloading FIFA 2004 than buying it. They'll save their money for PES3.
