Should you stretch before or after a run/warmup?

Ok we all know you need to stretch before a game to loosen and warm up your muscles. But at my club we usually stretch before we actually do anything, sometimes anyway. But when I was younger I remember being told always run and loosen up first before you stretch, because it's bad to stretch cold muscles.

I'd really like people's views on this, maybe you know some info? Because i've seen players stretch in the tunnel, before the warm up. So im really unsure....

Help?

for our team here is what we do- we have 2 soccer fields back-to--back (for the varsity and jv teams) and as we hit each corner we stop and stretch, and then go run again. We start running and then stretch.

Helll yeah.

I hurt my abs and I didn't do anything to warmup. Now I can't stand up straight and it hurts like crazy.

your supposed to do some warming up before you stretch. if you do too little or too much (warming up) you risk injury :(

my team will usually start off practice with like a 2.5 mile run

What?!?!?!:o thats quite a pre-practice warm up!!we usually only got for about 5-7 minutes and then actually practice (we might do longer runs later, but not daily like you)

While I don't play soccer anymore, I do run Cross Country and Track and Field at the Division I level here in the states. My team usually will have some light stetching on your own, then will warm up(run a couple of miles) then stretch then do our workout followed by a cooldown run, stetching and iciing. On days where we just have to go running, we stetch, run, stretch and ice.
Hope this helps some.

Remember, Stetching doesn't prevent injuries, it just aids in not getting one.

you should do light stretches before you start and after. If i don't do stretches before i warm up for any sport i feel very sore and not able to play at my best. But everyone is different i suppose :)

You have to raise your body temperature, get your heart flowing and new oxygen to the muscels.

The best warm up would be
1)2 min run (like round the pitch_
2)Dynamic stretching - in groups of 4 or 5 do 2 sets of heel flicks for 5, then 2 sets of high knees for 5, then 5 lunges.
3)after that should anything still be sore do some static stretching.

This is the warm up i use in my rugby team and i haven't pulled or strained or anything of the sort doing this warm up.

over here, we ALWAYS run before we stretch, unless its really heard running, like sprints, but if your coach is making you do sprints before you do ome warm-up jogging, then he is a moron.

my soccer coach showed us this way of streteching called active stretching

its actually really useful

you should stretch before to loosen up and after to avoid soreness and cramps

I've always done some light stretching, then short sprints, then the more intense stretches.

But as people have said, a lot of it is down to perosnal preference, you get used to what your muscles respond better to.

I play more 5-a-side than 11 a side, so need to do the short sprints, rather than long runs, therefore before doingt hem I always make sure that I have already stretched my hamstrings and ankles.

Remember to stretch before as well as after a game/activitity. Helps prevent aches in the morning a crap like that.
