Signed soccer shirts - how do I not get burnt?

I am considering buying a signed soccer shirt, but am not wanting to get burnt. Is the certificate of authenticity worth the paper it is written on? Also, what makes for good resale value? Black pen, more players, popular players??? I don't want to spend a lot of money on a shirt I could buy in a store.
