it seems that a big part of professional players are regular smokers, even though the football has evolved a lot from the times when players lit up a cigarette at half time. examples like Gallas, Zidane, Berbatov, Pires, Barthez, David James, Mutu, Chivu (he actually admitted he's a regular smoker and said he'll quit since he's about to become a father) and many other that I can't remember atm. they're pretty big players who play or have played at big clubs which implies having a top condition. though I can't make my mind on the issue, what do you think?

I'm totally against smoking at all. When I see people standing at a corner and smoking I lose much respect for them, even if they're totally strangers for me. And of course I lose repect to players that smoke as well. Smoking should be completely illegal.

Edit: Having a cigar at a party does not count

Just to point it out more clearly. I mean having a cigar when you're celebrating something (like your 30th birthday or winning the lottery). Not cigarettes when you're out and getting drunk, that's indeed lame.

Smoking's not good for your heart and lungs. Heavy smokers have 60 times more risk of getting lung cancer than non-smokers... And smoking is a high factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke which cause death. Its also a risk factor for MOST cancers nowadays. While smoking, you are reducing your life expectancy. Smoking combined with obesity reduces your life expectancy to as much as 13 years... These are real facts from studies... And yeah I agree that smoking should be strictly banned.

The only positive effects is that it brings you on a high and makes you more alert and makes you more concentrated, but thats only temporarily. If you are a smoker, its never too late, you still can quit :)

while i totally believe that the health risks associated with smoking will eventually catch up with you in the end, i do believe people should have some choice in their lives. i don't believe in fascism, so i'll have to disagree with nor-rbk on it becoming illegal. also, when people turn thirty or win the lottery i lose all respect for them (H)

as a smoker, i really cant believe that some professionals do it. i smoke sometimes when i'm actually playing (wouldnt it be funny to see a goalie light up when the ball is at the other end) but these guys are pros? i'd assume that there would be something in their contract stating that smoking aint cool with the club but i think that people's employment shouldnt dictate their lives outside of work. granted, a job where your physical condition plays a major part in your "work" is a different situation.

and to my parting thought: kids stay away from the tabak and just smoke the marijuana. also, don't trust the dutch. they'll get you addicted to cigs cause they mix when they roll. (Y)

ok whats this now...private practice?

I remember managers/coaches in Italy were allowed to smoke during league matches. The sight of it made me lose respect for them. So unprofessional.

The manager of my club team when I was 14 was an old German guy who lit up on the sidelines. It really psyched out other teams.

There was an Asian guy on my college team who used to smoke during practice. He looked ridiculously cool doing it too. Good player.

Honestly who gives a ****? Why do you care about what other people do with their personal time? Would you rather those players just quit playing?

3 years ago in an under 13's game a substitute on the other team lit up and just before half time he came on and scored a hattrick in about 5 minutes before he got subbed off and walked away.

Here are some pics with some famous players smoking :

Even thow smoking is a verry bad habit, it doesn't affect football players that much. Still, it's weird that Galls, Zidane and Berbatov (who were mentioned before), all of them smokers, had some discipline problems at a point of their career. Maybe smoking has something to do with that. I read somewhere smoking it actually affects the brain to ...:browsmiley::crazy:

I remember the former Mexico manager always smoking a pipe during his team's games. That looked somewhat cool and ridiculous at the same time.
I wouldn't ban smoking for players, since it's their own fault if their performance suffers because of it. It's their choice, and if their performance doesn't suffer then it doesn't matter.
I don't like smoking at all but if others choose to do it then they should.

Well this is what I think of it, smoking doesn't bring any benefits to the human body(short term benefits don't count, since u can add drugs to the equation if that's the case) , its the long term damage that's most evident. With football players dying and collapsing mysteriously on the pitch recently, they should be more concerned to take proper care of their body.

People who smoke just for the sake of looking good should go and pay a visit to their local hospital and see what happens to the people(especially elder folks) who have history of smoking/heavy smoking. Its certainly not something u should be proud of.
A lot of people are smoking just because they want to jump on the bandwagon, but believe me, people who started smoking a long time ago(like me dad) have all probably stopped/or want to and plan to stop since they have realized the devastating effects, even so, the damage is already done.

My father died of a heart disease(sudden death) and he didn't have any other illness at the time(as matter of fact, he was completely healthy) or family history of heart disease. We only knew the fact that he was a heavy smoker in his youth, even if he stopped as he reached his mid-30s.

Just imagine if kids see pictures of these players that they idolize so much, what kind of effect it would have on them.
For those who are smoking, its still not too late.
