Some Linux help please

I managed to install Red Hat Linux 9 today (first try too). But I still have some problems though...I can't access my modem (and hence the internet under Linux) and my sound card doesn't seem to be detected either (dunno if any other problems exist as I haven't played around with it much)

I'm new to Linux so don't blow me up or anything if I'm asking silly stuff. How do I get my modem to work under Linux? (Or, it is the winmodem problem thingie...I'm not sure if it is a winmodem or not but I'm guessing...how do I check btw?) Also, what sorta stuff can I do to
get my sound card to work.

Basically, I'm gonna need to get the modem to work under Linux as I have some programming to do and I'll need stuff off the net (the other option is to log onto XP and download and then open it back in Linux...which leads me to my next question)...

How can I view the files on my XP partition while logged in to Linux (and vice versa)?
