Maybe in your infinite wisdom you could then describe for us all exactly what a team has to achieve in order to be a "world class" or "top" team.

Haha, quite the flamewar, seriously though, we all know Football rules, which is why we are on this forum. But c'mon saying something like "American Football requires no skill" is just a rather abrasive way of saying "I don't like it."

I personally enjoy American Football (even though the Vikings SUCK), but I can't respect a sport with *commercial breaks* written in the rules (quarters, two-minute warnings to name a few) as much as I do real Football. Also American Football has way too much downtime. If some of you Europeans wonder why Americans can watch such a slow sport, grab an assload of beer and friends and watch it :mrpimp: then you'll see.

Also I don't think Football is gaining popularity in America. The massive amount of fair-weather fans (not to mention the INSANE patrotism during that time) that peeked out during the World Cup already forgot what the sport is.
Finally an American who knows what he's talking about you couldn't be more right.

Football.....

Not only Americans reffer to thier game as "football" rugby league clubs in the uk such as Wigan had the name "Wigan rugby league football club" which used to confuse the hell out of visiting fans to the real football club in Wigan many times coach`s with away fans to football would go to the rugby league ground.

sorry was bored thought this might lighten up the anti "American football" theme in here:)

have to say calling the game "Soccer" doesnt help you Americans out any j/k:)

Niss.

"PS btw: US is a world talent at soccer.. are they a top 5, world class World Cup contender.. UMM NOT REALLY.. but we did finish 8 out of 32, and very easily should of beaten Germany, who we outplayed.. So give up some respect."

You see the not really part? right then. Poland only won cause we were slacked and they mad ethe best of their chances like any good football team would.. are we a better team then poland overall, specially then.. yes. Even if the use a African born player who has no polish heritage as there star striker :)

So many of you guys don't have a clue...

Personally, I like sports. I like to compete and I like to watch a good competition. Football/Soccer is my favorite sport. But through the year I watch Football/Soccer, American Football, Australian Football, Gaelic Games, Basketball, Tennis, Rugby whatever...

I don't really care what games you like or think are stupid... I am glad I live in a place where there is a great variety of sport (not to knock other places). Cause I like to Play and run and Jump and kick and hit and throw etc.

Anyone who is so closed minded so that the only sport for them is football/soccer is kind of sad... that is kind of like deciding Ham and Cheeses is the best sandwhich and then eating it exclusively for the next 25 years.

You see fella's, the problem is, we're arguing with a couple of Shifty*rod's. Anyone who through's out insult's so effortlessly, "NFL Suck's" among other's, is either a) 15 yrs old, or b) skipped class the day they were teaching lesson's in tact. Granted, this is a forum to 'discuss' this stuff, but only kid's or idiot's "insult' rather than 'elaborate'. Yes, it's hyppocritical to call you 'Shifty*rod's', but i'm trying to make a point here.

Anyway, sport's in general are a good thing, regardless of where you live etc. They bring country's, and people together. It's all good. O.K....group hug now. Peace.;)

Why shouldn't Donovan be on the cover? Each part of the world gets a different player on the cover gorrect? Well the big story in North America is the US national team coming out of nowhere to kick ass, and the big player in north America at the moment is Landon Donovan. So it makes sense. Plus more Fifa sales come from the US and Canada than from Mexico, so it makes more sense to have a US or Canadian player on the cover of the game. Simple fact is that Donovan will sell better on the cover in North America than a Mexican player would. It's business. It's just like having Davids on the cover in Parts of Europe, it would sell better than having a guy from the Russian league. Purely a marketing ploy.

Soccer in the US is one of the top 2 league sports played by kids and teens along wiht baseball. When you say that soccer isn't popular do you mean the act of watching a soccer game on tv from the MLS or Europe, or do you mean the act of actually playing the game. Because soccer is very popular to play. But most Americans don't care to watch the games. the resons are:

90 minutes, about 60 minutes of which are rather slow and most people find boring.

People just don't give a damn about what Man u. or Ajax are doing. We're in the US they're over in Europe, it becomes hard for people here to get into a sport taking place overseas.

Poor exposure. I live in new York, and we get 1 MLS game a week, 1 Premiership game sometimes on weekends, 2 Mexican games on Sundays on 2 differnt Spanish tv stations. and sometimes 1 Campions league game. So some people will watch the MLS game. The Premiership game is often on in the middle of the night, or during American football games on SUnday, so few people watch. The Mexican games draw little crowd because everything is in Spanish. and the Champions league games are at 3 or 4pm on weekdays when most people are working. So people don't have much of an oppritunity to really sit down and watch a good soccer game, unless they want to skip work, listen to an overzealous Spanish announcer, or miss an NFl game. I bet in Europe you guys get a ton of games to watch, and good games too. Hell, I'd love it if the Serie A games were on here but they aren't.

So in colclusion, Soccer will NEVER be the main sport here. It may one day overtake hockey, and threaten baseball, but basketball and football (US) are too huge for soccer to ever overtake. There just isn't the room for another major sport right now. I mean, if ABC or NBC or CBS wanted to show a Premiership or Serie A game during primetime on Saturday or Sundays, soccer may grow here, but no stationw ants to take that risk because they know the interest just isn't there right now.

But we do have alot of talent here, as I said soccer is huge among kids and teens as a sport played, but just not watched. I mean do you guys in Span England, and Holland follow MLS or Mexi league games and leagues closely? So how do you expect the general American public to follow your games closely?

You're absolutely right. I dare not say anything negative about other country's, but here in the US, we just have so much to offer the youth. If you ask a kid in the US what or who he want's to be like when they grow up, you'd get answer's like: Derek Jeter, Kobe Bryant, Brett Favre etc...but i tell ya what, soccer is on the rise here, no doubt. My ex-girlfriend is a sporting good's telemarketer, and her company's research showed that soocer (football for the rest of ya) is second only to hockey in improving merchandise sales (not overall, this is of course NFL and baseball, but in increased popularity). Soon, these kid's WILL be saying "Donovan" or "Wolff".

Quick note about TV coverage:

You may think that not many people watch games on Univision or Telemundo... But what you didn't take into account is that those 2 stations get ratings on Par with or better than the Big 4 US TV networks.

A HUGE portion of the US population speak spanish and that is why we have so many soccer games.

I get more free Mexican league games on TV than my Family in Monterrey Mexico.
