Southampton are set to unveil Paul Sturrock as permanent successor to Gordon Strachan at a press conference later today. Sturrock became favourite for the job yesterday, when Glenn Hoddle announced he had withdrawn his application, stating lack of support from the board as his main reason. Sturrock formally resigned from Plymouth yesterday, and was expected to sign this morning as Southampton finalised a compensation package.
Sturrock, who has also managed St. Johnstone and Dundee, is one of the brightest young managers in England. The Scot, who is 48 later this year, currently sits third in the LMA manager performance league, behind only Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson. He was named LMA manager of the year two season ago when he lead Plymouth to the Division 3 title. Last season they finished just outside a Playoff spot, and the currently sit top of Divison 2 pushing for promotion to Divison 1. Sturrock performed an amazing transformation on the club, who were languishing in 18th in Division 3 when he took over.

Looks like a promising manager, and goes against the recent argument that no lower division managers ever make it to the premier league. He's been given a week to get to know the squad before he takes charge of his first match at home to liverpool next saturday. Interesting fact: Not one of the last 10 saints managers has ever lost their first game in charge... should be a good game.
