Square gradient texture or whatever you want to call it tutorial

A couple of people have been asking me how I did the background on my sig and my latest backgrounds, so I decided to make a tutuorial.

For this example i'm doing it for a sig. The first step is to use the gradient tool like so
 
Select the pencil tool, adjust to the brush diameter to 1 if your doing a sig or 2 if your doing a wallpaper. Make a design like the below picture using a color that's not in the second layer. It's easier if you do like 9 squares then copy and paste a couple of times, then merge the layers and copy and paste again. (note this picture is zoomed in)
 
Once you've filled the whole area you should get something like the picture below. Then select all of the squares and delete them so that in the squares the gradient from the layer below is showing through.
