SUV Drivers?

How many people here drive an SUV, what do you think about them?

I am looking at maybe buying a Nissan Xterra with the money left from paying for school. I was hellbent on buying a Jeep Grand cherokee, but I was told that the Xterra was better. Anyone have anything else to add for or against either of the two cars stated above? I work at Sears, a lot of time the salesmen will tell the customers the better product if the more expensive one, which is not really always the case. Which is what I am afraid of happening if I ask a dealership.

Damn, every American college kid has a car these days. Over here if you had the kind of money to buy a car you'd spend it on cool stuff like booze and birds :(

I was looking at replacing my Honda Civic with a Honda Element. I know they're ugly-as-f*ck, but also really practical. I been doing some surveying work over the past couple months and something like that would be ideal for throwing my muddy equipment and stuff into the back. I really want a Mini Cooper, but it just wouldn't be wise at all.

As long as I can remember, my dad has driven a SUV. Right now, we've got a GMC Envoy. However, he's been looking at the possibility of getting rid of it, in favour of a smaller, more fuel-effcient import. As for me, I still don't drive, and I don't see the need to either. Hell, I never even learned how to ride a damn bike.

Well, that's what I do. In fact I blow so much money on that stuff that if I don't get enough money this Christmas I'll have a problem about paying my tuition next semester.

Sometimes I drive my dad's 2006 Toyota Highlander and it makes me feel so damn powerful. Save up some money for gas though.

Plus, the chances of someone else being killed instead of you in an accident is much higher in an SUV than in a regular-sized car.

I would look at some other cars, the element has not been out very long(I don't think), which means you could get something that looks better, with almost the same cargo room, for far cheaper.

I had a Honda Civic all throughout high-school up until a couple months ago when I traded it in for a brand new Element. At first I was looking at some sedans and coupes like the Scion tC but I've had too much trouble in the past with speeding and tickets so I thought I'd settle down a bit and look for an SUV. I'm a real outdoorsy type of guy, I go camping at least once a month, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing etc. so I shopped around for one. The Honda Element was LAST on my list behind the Subaru Outback, Nissan X-Terra, and Toyota Rav-4. Whenever I saw an Element on the road, I thought it was the fugliest car ever, but after you test-drive one you'll really see why this car is so great. The look does take some getting used to but it really doesn't look that bad after a couple mods. I chose the Element because it's versatility, ruggedness, good mpg in its class, and it's a Honda. You can take out the back seats completely, or leave them in and make them into beds for camping etc. the list goes on. Another thing that'll amaze you is the amount of room inside. My boss drives a Sequioa which is twice the size of this car and he rode in my car once on a trip and he said the interior was definitely more spacious than the Sequioa. I'm 6'1 and I have long basketball arms and I can stretch my arms fully in this car. The only bad thing maybe is the suicide doors. Other than that it's a really great car shinji, you should really look into it. It's fairly priced too.

Here's a pretty cool forum I found that has lots of information.

You can make it look pretty damn nice.

SUVs have that affect.

I'm a walker, bikerider and busrider, myself. Buses are fun. I've encountered some of the oddest people on there.

It's been out for a few years now. Far cheaper SUV?? Only a piece if sh!t Hyundai, Kia or something.. anyway, it's not specifically just the cargo room I'm looking for, it's overall practicality, something luxury SUV don't have. Trust me man, I've owned like 6 cars in my lifetime, some nice, some not, I know what to look for..

m3th0d: Thanks, you've reinforced what I was hoping for/thinking about the Element. It's that very ruggedness and versitility I need. A company I worked for a few years ago had a Mercedes M-Class as one of it's company vehicles which I drove a couple days a week and that thing, while being very nice and all is really made for soccer-moms and posers. It's just a sedan, only higher off the ground. It doesn't have any of the qualities you mentioned about the Element.

Can't beat Honda reliability either...I briefly owned an Audi A4 back in 2000/2001 and besides it's interior luxury and appearance, it was a piece of sh!t next to my Civic.

i wouldn't trade my 95 nissan maxima for an suv, the car is just fine. its only got 45,000 miles on it plus its got leather and a sun roof, i don't think a big suv is better than that car. plus i wouldn't spend a lot of money on an suv when i got my nissan for free from my aunt. my family does have an suv type thing, its one of those van's with a tv,vcr, dvd player, rear radio, reclining back seats, its pretty cool we got it when we travel for my brothers hockey games

worst of the suvs are durangos, poor fuel economy, very plain, clunky steering, and bad accelerator 'feel' (like most dodge). its cheap price tags are not there for show, avoid it at any cost. actually, avoid all american suvs, not just a dodge. my uncle barely got 5k for his full option EDDIE BAUER edition expedition.

that element looks alright, and since it's a honda it's probably very dependable. if money would allow though, I only recommend you the lexus lx class. amazing.

Hondas are always so well tuned, very very good to drive. I have driven CRV, JAZZ, CIVIC (Hatchback and Coupe) and they compare alot better than other cars of the same style and age.

I have never seen a Honda Element before, but they look cool in pics on the net such as:
