I would happily welcome that. Thing is, Lecce has a terrible youth system and I've been shut down on upgrade requests three times now. They say they think it's adequate for the team even though I have no good youth players coming up. It's bull****... after this year I'm surely jumping ship. And I'm taking Messi with me! (H)

To get the youth players coming through it's more important to have the best youth recruitment. And it depends on your country too. I don't know what it is, but I'm having problems getting good Italians up to the first team at Fiorentina too.

TBH I actually think youth training facilities are kind of pointless. Recruitment and Junior Coaching are more important. When I get a young player with any potential I promote him to the first team so he can train with a senior schedule.

And if your board is cool enough, maybe one day you can have facilities like this

At Fiorentina I don't even have the option to ask the board for better than "good" youth recruitment.

I'll have to look into it. I didn't know that. I guess I had been lucky to have good youth recruiters in the past because this is the first time it has been an issue.

So as pathetic as it sounds, I've had no success in the Champions League at all. My best has been round of 16 exits. I play Schalke (one of my old teams) and lose 0-1 at home and lose my biggest threat in attack for two months in this game.

The rest of the team delivered, though!

Quarter finals here we come!

Edit: not without another huge ******* loss, though.

Champions League can be extremely frustrating when you've achieved domestic dominance. Don't get discouraged, in most of my really great games I have a lot of problems with the Champions League for several years before breaking through.

Drew Bayern in the quarter finals missing both wingers (about 50+ goals in between the two), but I have done well against Bayern. If memory serves, I don't think I've lost to Bayern yet...

First leg:

Ugly game. Extremely lucky to come out with a narrow defeat. Bayern was constantly attacking and constantly dangerous, so I took this as a win.

Leg 2:

YEAH!!! SEMIS!

After Bayern scored the goal that put them through on away goals, I felt that I was ****ed, but the team fought back valiantly and held on missing the two most most important players. Legends!

In anti-climactic fashion, this is my next opponent:

We'll see how it pans out. Making out of the semis will be way more than I even thought I could do with this team, so I'm already playing with house money.

First leg:

Frustrating game. Made the mistake of playing too conservative and it cost me. To my surprise, Real is nothing spectacular and are fourth in La Liga. So I was confident going on the second leg.

Leg 2:

YESSSSSSS!!! (H)

Ayew has been ******* immense. The back ups have been huge and I'm actually thinking I have a shot at this after all...

In the league I'm Chelsea-ing it up. I can't win for ****, and I'm fourth when I was second nearly all season. Seems if I don't win the CL, I'll be playing in the Europa League.

Oh and the irony:

Mourinho is the manager and I had them in the group stages. They embarrassed me both games. Hope I can get revenge! (H)

Congrats STML1, good journeyman thread you got going. Care for a shot of your manager history? Where it shows all the places you've worked at in order.

Yeah. Two interesting things I noticed. One is the borderline-derogatory comment in the private chat section. Do you use the chats that often? I'd use it fairly often, and had something to that effect, but it seems that you use it much more than I do, what for? Do you praise and critique the players often for their form?

Also, only Mexico and USA in your knowledge section? Maybe because of your limited time at each country, but I'd assume 3-4 years in Italy and 5 years in Ukraine would give you SOME knowledge (I know it's meaningless, but still), even when you consider that knowledge can deteriorate. 6-7 years in Chelsea had me at full England, and some, maybe full Croatia and Spain having managed their NTs. And I remember that players who liked me had Israel on theirs.

Just curious.

I used to pretty much talk to every player that was concerned and whatnot. Not so much anymore, seems they stop bitching if the team is winning and go full tantrum mode if the team isn't doing great and they're not playing enough. Some of them don't even make sense, so I stopped bothering with it.

Yeah, I don't quite get that. I should at least have Ukraine as a known nation since I was there five or six years. I never really paid any mind to it since it doesn't seem to make teams stop approaching me. I average about two years per club aside from one where I was sacked and the Russian team that sucked, and I had no patience to make them better.

Totally awesome feeling to have what seemed like an average squad win the CL without the two best players. Total fluke of a run because I doubt I can pull this off again.

It's a celebration, bitches!!!

In a total Mourinho-esque move, I'm leaving Lecce to find a stronger team to be in the hunt for the CL more consistently. (H)

I would recommend staying at Lecce and managing more on auto-pilot until a top job becomes available. Although ****, what am I to say, I resigned from Gladbach and waited a year until the City job became available.

Good for you.

You didn't deserve to go through after that performance at the Allianz though

Haha, yeah. That was a bizarre game. It's usually me with all those wasted clear cut chances so maybe the game engine finally let me have something. (H)

I would if this team wasn't going to ****. They're in massive debt. So much debt the training grounds were downgraded. I had no youth players coming up at all, I'm talking no player better than 2 star potential. In the Champions League I was having a hell of a time registering players because I don't have enough home grown players, so I had to field some ridiculous teams at times, especially after the injuries.

I was going to leave regardless but this was the best thing that could have happened.

Also:

Found a team. Looks like Barcelona and Real Madrid are both struggling (Barça ended third and Real ended fourth while Atletico won La Liga)

I was actually considered the main target for Real, but **** them. (H)

Team looks solid for the most part but I haven't looked thoroughly.

It's rare to get good youth players in your own system, scout for good 14-16 year olds and bring them in.

ShiftyPowers

Also be aware that the star values for players are constantly re-evaluated as your team gets better. I can't find any young player on my, or any, team rated above 3 stars by my scouts now because I have spent so much time and money building a superstar team.

Yeah, keep in mind that a 5 star rating means he's better than anyone else in the team, pretty much, so if you have great strikers, you won't get a 5 star ST youngster ever.
