The Arctic Monkeys

How many people here actually like them?

I like a couple of their songs like Fluorescent Adolescent and Old Yellow Bricks but I think most of their stuff is the same. I find them to be a very overrated band, but everyone I know LOVES them. (:/) People always say to me "How can you not like the Arctic Monkeys?!" when I tell them I find them incredibly average at best. Most people I know just look at me as if I've commited a murder. :|

Also another band that I find to be overrated (especially by the NME...shocker) is The Enemy. Man, I haven't listened to such a boring and uninspiring album in years.

Thoughts..?

I agree completely. I don't find Arctic Monkeys particuarly interesting at all, it's just very generic indie rock to me. I do find a bit of their music quite enjoyable, but the hysteria around them is ridiculous.
The Enemy on the other hand, is just very generic, rather crap indie rock from a band with an awful, generic name and image. They'd be hard pressed to be any more unappealing. Of course, i could easily say the same for a large percentage of the current British "indie" rock scene.

The question is, will there ever be a British band as good/big as Oasis were? I don't think there will be, and that's depressing.

"As good as Oasis" - I'd put Muse as being "better" than Oasis myself.

There's plenty of good bands in the UK, I think there'll always be good, fresh talent around here and I'm glad of it. Even if not strictly Indie, bands like Guillemots are original and show that people still make good music nowadays, even if people wish to think that modern music is rubbish.

(The Arctic Monkeys earn a "meh" from me, couple of songs I like but I'm not into them at all)

I quite rate them, but, coming from where i do, you kind of have to.

They're the best of the new 'British-indie' bands, the likes of Kaiser Chiefs, Kooks, Kasabian, Maximo Park being the followers if you like.

Not on the same level as Muse of course, but different type of band entirely :D

I completely agree. All these indie bands come around like every year, put out a record - an average one too, then disappear.

I'd disagree with that. Though, Muse aren't really my cup of tea. I love Starlight, but that's about it. Oasis have many classics. Wonderwall, Live Forever, Some Might Say, Champagne Supernova, etc, etc... :p They also had the fastest selling debut album in the UK, and recently received the "outstanding contribution to music" award - that's something Muse probably won't ever achieve. Though I'm not saying Muse are rubbish - just not my thing. The impact Oasis made was far greater than Muse made.

Muse have won best live band countless times, and best album a few times at award ceremonies all across the world.

Oh, and the fact you rate Starlight, easily Muse's 'poppiest' song as your favourite, i think maybe shows you dont QUITE get Muse.

No offence like, i mean Oasis are ace.

Arctic Monkeys. Meh. Average. Every single of them sounds so the same.

I can name a lot of better bands. Arctic Monkeys are just one of the way too many indie bands atm.

edit: IMO Oasis is a bunch of crap btw.

Fair play, Tom. I have indeed heard Muse are a great live act. I'm not knocking them or anything, Matt Bellamy has an awesome voice which is why Starlight sort of caught my attention. You're not a fan of the song then?

I don't particularly like Oasis. Arctic Monkeys do have some great songs but I agree that they are overrated.
I really like Muse, though it did take me a while until I got into it.

Yeah, I suppose it'll be the same with me. I didn't really like Oasis at first..infact, a lot of the bands I listen to now I didn't like instantly. I didn't particularly care for U2 for some reason, but now they're one of my favourites. But their first few albums are f'n class, especially The Joshua Tree - one of the best albums I've ever listened too. (Y)

I'll have to listen to Muse a bit more I guess, takes me a while to get into things. I love Bellamy's voice - which is a good starting point I suppose. :p

EDIT: What does everyone think about The Jam? They were a class british band.

disagreed.

Supermassive Black Hole.

Monkeys (N)

I've read that a lot of the other bands also dont rate them because they never 'struggled' to get to the top.

They got famous because some label caught their MySpace page and liked their music.

Completely agree, in fact, the whole album compared to previous ones looks more commercial, imo.
