whether he implied it or not, its not something he needed to say after the way he played
now he might not pull on the number10 again this tournament :(

What do you guys think of Pirlo stepping in?

I think he'll do a fantastic job and will be like Totti, he's a fantastic player!

I hope Di Vaio comes in the 2nd half. Perrotta played better in the 1st game than Zanetti. Maybe Trap knows Perrotta can't play on LCM. Gattuso loses the ball too often but he's a grinder. Pirlo will be great.

I hope the Totti saga will regroup the team and they will play better.

Cassano AND Del Piero will play behind Vieri if they both play.

Thats the best Italy lineup IMO.

Pirlo (Y)

Zambrotta backs Alex

Italy’s Gianluca Zambrotta has defended teammate Alessandro Del Piero from mass criticism.

The latter wasn’t particularly impressive against Denmark on Monday but Zambrotta has backed his Juventus colleague.

"He is playing in a position which isn’t his and he’s not moaning about it," said the left-back.

"Alessandro is a second striker so he is having to run a lot more here on the left flank in order to be of use to the team.

"When you consider how much he has given to Juventus and Italy in the past, I think it is rather stupid to criticise him."

There were reports that Del Piero would have been replaced by Marco Di Vaio for the Sweden tie but that now looks unlikely.

Italy boss Giovanni Trapattoni is set to shelve that experiment with Francesco Totti likely to miss the game through suspension.

Meanwhile, Zambrotta also commented on the developments at his club with David Trezeguet set to stay.

"I already said that I thought he would," noted the left-back. "He is an important player for us now and will be in the future."

Zambrotta said little about the arrival of Fabio Capello as boss and the likely signing of Emerson.

"Capello? I’ve not spoken to him yet and I don’t know anything about Emerson," he concluded.

Forza Zambrotta for his comments:rockman:

In the meantime, Trap used this formation earlier.

Buffon
Panucci-Cannavaro-Materazzi-Zambrotta
Fiore-Pirlo-Zanetti
Cassano-Del Piero
Vieri.

Nesta played with the reserves. Don't worry, he'll start instead of killer Materazzi.;)

How important could Gilardino been today, with Vieri missing all those headers. Once again, GOOD THING Corradi was brought (Y)

You guys think Lippi would of done the same changes?

I say yes. We need a coach that focuses on attack first and defense second.

i think lippi wouldnt of taken cassano off
the italian football commitee won't hire an international coach, but i can think of an italian coach that wouldnt of shut up shop like trap did, he went too far, physco almost with the changes
there was no need to take off cassano and DP and leave a Vieri who was lacking touch

I wouldve taken off DP. He was looking tired. Id have replaced him with a defender, and moved zambrotta to RM

Italy qualify if... Saturday 19 June, 2004
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The situation in Group C is now extremely complicated and even a 3-0 victory over Bulgaria might not be enough to see Italy through to the Quarter-Finals.

Giovanni Trapattoni’s men must beat already eliminated Bulgaria in order to have any hope of catching the leading Scandinavian pair, but there are several different results that could put a spanner in the works.

If either Denmark or Sweden win, then Italy would progress in second place with five points and the winning side would top the Group on six.

However, if that game ends in a draw, then all three teams are on five points and UEFA’s rules go through a series of criteria to decide who qualifies.

The only results that count would be those played between these teams, therefore discounting the scorelines against Bulgaria.

As all three matches ended in a draw, the goal difference in these games would also be equal.

UEFA then analyses the goals scored in these encounters, which is why the result of the Denmark-Sweden game is so crucial – it is the only one that can be changed.

Italy scored once in their meetings with the Scandinavians, as have Sweden, while so far Denmark are on 0.

A 0-0 draw would therefore see the Azzurri safely through, as Denmark would remain a goal behind them in this miniature table.

A 1-1 draw would put Sweden out in front, while Italy and Denmark are level on one goal apiece. Here, UEFA turns to the goal difference throughout the entire Group phase, so Trapattoni’s team must beat Bulgaria 2-0 to be sure of matching Denmark’s record.

At this stage, the UEFA coefficient comes into play. The Azzurri again have the upper hand with a rating of 2.31 compared to 2.05 for the Danes.

However, a draw between the Scandinavian neighbours with four goals or more would automatically eliminate Italy regardless of their result against Bulgaria.

The Azzurri qualify if Italy beat Bulgaria and:

1) either Denmark or Sweden win
2) Denmark and Sweden draw 0-0
3) Denmark and Sweden draw 1-1 and Italy beat Bulgaria by two clear goals

Italy go out if:

1) Italy fail to beat Bulgaria
2) Denmark and Sweden draw 2-2 or above
