Since this is technically now the games forum, i felt the need to post this:

Sony Computer Entertainment America is celebrating the PlayStation 2's seventh birthday, announcing that the console has sold more than 120 million units and more than a billion pieces of software worldwide.

Released in North America on October 26, 2000 and on sale in the UK a month later on November 24, 2000, the console quickly became the fastest-selling games system to reach the magic 100 million mark, hitting the milestone within five years and nine months of its launch.

Despite its age, over 30 million games have been sold in the past year, and Sony expects to have shipped 10 million PS2 consoles for the 12 months to March 2008.

"Never before has an in-home game system experienced this type of worldwide success on such a long-lasting scale," said Peter Dille, SCEA's senior vice president of marketing and PlayStation network.

"PlayStation 2 is a perfect example of our ten year product life-cycle promise and is a testament to the design and technology that continues to be at the core of the product. While today's anniversary celebrates PlayStation 2's past, we’re very excited for its future."

The firm claims it is still committed to a 10-year product life, revealing it has 160 new PS2 titles lined up between now and the end of March 2008, with more than 1,400 games already available on the platform.

Since its launch, the top-selling PS2 titles worldwide are:

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (13 million)
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (12 million)
Grand Theft Auto III (11 million)
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (11 million)
Gran Turismo 4 (8.79 million)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (7 million)
Kingdom Hearts (5.6 million)
Final Fantasy X (5 million)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (3.7 million)
Final Fantasy XII (3.68 million)

For me, the best console ever made, what do you guys think? Name some of your favourite consoles here then i'll put together a bit of a 10-console-poll and we can see.

Thoughts?

Definitely the best console ever. Is that accurate, Vice City is the best selling title? That's the one I never bought, I'm a little surprised. I didn't think it was as groundbreaking as GTA III (same game), nor as amazing as San Andreas.

Gonna put these all in a poll tomorrow by the way. I just got it from DigitalSpy Shifty, which tends to be pretty reputable.

I'm surprised FIFA isnt in there.

Hahahahaha, yeah right. Madden sells more than FIFA. Madden is EA's Crown Jewel, but sports games are at a disadvantage because they come out every year with only small changes, so people won't buy them as much as they will a game like GTA or Gran Turismo, when you never know when the next version will come out.

EDIT: Also, the PS exclusive titles sell more than the non-exclusive ones if you're just counting sales on the PS2 console.

You're saying Madden outsells FIFA in South America, Europe or Asia?

Fair second point though (Y)

I still have a PS2 after six years, and I doubt I'll get a PS3 anytime soon. As far as my favorite game of all time is either GTA III or Madden 2003.

Consoles and fps.. pffft

anyway NES - SNES > Playstation > everything else. Playstation is there only because it was the first 3d console.

Wrong. It was Amiga Cd-32.
