The goal of all life is death - Sigmund Freud.

To what extent do you agree, that the goal of all life is death?

what you think of the quote?

Do you think Freud is just some crazy freak who should of smelled the fresh air when i he could of :D

Or as we have seen, the only way to fix the place is to kill everyone in the human race?

Opinions.

I don't agree at all with the use of the word "goal".

goal(n.) The purpose toward which an endeavor is directed

death is an eventuall outcome of life, but it is far from endeavored towards.

if the purpose of life was to die, life simply would not exist. killing yourself isnt really that hard - prehistoric organisms would have all killed themselves hundreds of millions years ago if they wanted to die. life would not be here today...

the fact that plants and animals adapt to their surroundings, that they they hunt, and eat - seems to counter this quote. their actions are an endeavour to LIVE, not die.

in conclusion Freud is just some crazy freak who should of smelled the fresh air when i he could of

I agree to a point...

I mean, "goal" as Parra said is "the purpose towards which an endeavor is directed"...

Going by that definition Mr Power, I cant see how you could deny that lifes goal is death...Our "endeavor" (life), is obviously directed at death, as it is certain, AND ends the journey.

But then it depends how you define "directed"...Directed, to me means what the end goal is. What something points to...And to be honest, life points to death. You cant live without dying, and all life ends with it...To me that means life IS directed at death.

So it does make loads of sense, that "the goal of all life is death"...

However, Hitman, I think youve taken the quote out of context. Where does Freud ever say that this means that we should just go around shooting everyone?

The goal to life may well be death, BUT isnt the fun in the journey?

Killing everyone is cutting the journey short, and therefore taking away the fun. Consider it a road trip. The end goal is death, and whilst you might not be looking forward to getting there, there will be a heap of fun to be had on the way ;)

We never said that people "endeavor" to die...

When did I say that, and when did Freud say that?

Your using the endeavor verb, rather than the Endeavor noun...

Read the sentence that you wrote (quoted from a dictionary)..."To which an endeavor is directed"...No the be all of an endeavor. As I said, the endeavor IS undoubtably DIRECTED to death...We dont endeavor to die (altho that could be argued too), BUT the endeavor of LIFE is directed at death...

Simple really ;)

as a depressed guy like me, the goal of life is death.
I used to think bout it but I cant find a reason for it, why should we live if someday we will die ? if someday all we achieved will be lost ? n I think bout existence too. it's confusin n I cant explain it for u.
I've committed suicide for 2 times but damn I'm still alive. my friends saved me ( they think they saved me ) n I still breathe...

During my final year of high school when I was heaps stressed I used to do the same thing...

I never attempted suicide, because I think thats the easy way out, and to be honest, its pretty bloody final...Even if the goal of life is to die, might as well have fun getting there...

I used to always think learning, and knowledge was a waste, if one day we'd just die and lose it all...BUT now I htink the opposite...Make the most of the time ur alive...If dying is the end, then we might as well keep this game going for a bit longer...Dont take things too seriously, if you do, thats when people are unhappy IMO...

well put Mr Woolcock ;)

I agree, altho the meaning of goal in this instance isnt really the definition Parra got from the dictionary, I agree that the only thing in life that is certain, is death...Once we get there, it may very well be the end, so have fun whilst before u get there...Dont rush there...The fun is in the journey :) :alex:

Death is inevitable; it's what we do with our lives that makes us live on as a memory in people's hearts.

If everyone is born with an Who-cares-we're-all-going-to-die-attitude then there would be no nothing.

Evolution was a struggle to live; a struggle to survive.

For me the goal of life isn't to die but to live on as something; some succeed, some don't.

I agree with most of that...But I ask you this...

Whats the point of evolution? Are we achieving anything thru it?

There seem to be more depressed and stressed people in the world now then there were 100 years ago, so is our evolution helping us?
Thats speaking of evolution on a rather large scale of course, not just an individuals evolution....

"If everyone is born with an Who-cares-we're-all-going-to-die-attitude then there would be no nothing"...Would we be missing out if this was the case? If there was nothing, then would it worry us?

Basically I do agree with you, and to me the purpose of life is to A) Enjoy it, before the inevitability of death dawns on you, and B) Be remembered. If noone remembers, did it happen?

endeavor - activity intended to do or accomplish something

life can't be called an endeavor, simply because it is not intended to acomplish one thing, unless you agree with the original quote that is that the goal is to die....in which case, through the definitions ive given, you are saying that basically everyone and every living thing lives its life with the intent of dying?

which brings me back to the point of bothering to exist

i would have to agree and disagree with the statement as we are not striving to death but to fulfill life to end our lives gracefully woould be correct i suppose. :p

I'm not gonna argue bout existence cuz I'm sure we'll all be confused after it n we will get no answer though.
