Maybe I should have put stars in quotes, but yes. Gaitan was never going to work in that setup. Hell, Simeone has been playing wingers like Carrasco as forwards.
The other issue, of course, is that if you're playing defensive against a promoted team, they probably aren't going to give you a lot of opportunities to counter attack.
Messi scores with a deflected shot outside the box and Dybala gets a red exactly when my shitty stream goes off for a minute. Other than that, Di Maria still loses every fucking ball and Argentina is playing with a 28 y.o guy Lucas Pratto as #9.
Dybala is going to emulate Messi. According to some dudes on reddit Messi got red carded in one of his first appearences for Argentina too. I know it's not the first cap for Dybala, but still.
But Colombia beating Venezuela earlier made my day. Everything is not lost yet for them when it comes to qualifying for the next World Cup. It would literally suck without Colombia. I hope they'll manage to wipe the floor with Brazil next. They should've won like 6-0, but both Bacca and James missed a penalty and there were so many chances that they couldn't capitalize on. Gotta be more lethal in front of the goal.
EDIT: Also James was absolutely incredible again. The fact that he's mostly rotting on the bench at Real Madrid is seriously doing my head in. I wish the guy would get a move to some team where he'd get regular playtime, and who could actually use him. Would be both good for him and the Colombian national team.
The first time I remember seeing Messi, and this is after being tipped off about him on SG, was World Cup 2006. I've never seen a young player do what he did, and honestly don't expect to ever again.
17 years old.
And the most impressive part wasn't necessarily his mazy runs with the ball, but rather the fact that he came onto the pitch at that age for a veteran Argentina team with Riquelme as their Enganche, and Messi was instantly the focal point for their offense every time. Forget Riquelme, get the ball to the kid. It was fucking amazing.
That's quite a cool clip and a nice story to go with it.
It's truly amazing to see a 17-year-old playing next to legends like Riquelme doing the stuff he's doing over there. For some reason I cannot remember his performances during the 2006 World Cup at all. I think I didn't see enough Argentina matches. I remember watching the one against Mexico only, I think. The one where Maxi Rodriguez scored that belter in extra-time. Prolly watched the Holland match as well, and now that I put some more thought into it.. I remember them playing Germany as well in some bar. Still have no recollection of Messi though.
Based on that video, you can clearly see that Messi is still quite raw over there. Compared to the player he has now become there's a massive difference. But I suppose you can tell right away that this is an extremely talented player with a big future. Dominating teams like that at 17 is Pele-esque.
I sort of feel sorry for him that it went like it did during last Copa América. He's been soo unlucky when it comes to international football with Argentina. 2018 in Russia will probably be his last chance to win something with them. It'll most likely be an end of a certain generation as well. Players like Banega, Mascherano, Agüero, Higuain etc are slowly fading off.
While there are new players like this Lo Celso, Dybala, Icardi, Kranevitter, Rulli etc slowly coming on.
Dybala is going to be massive that's for certain. Juventus might have lost Pogba for a huge chunk of money, but imo they would've been even worse off, had the lost Dybala instead of Pogba who's their real gem.
EDIT: And when it comes to that World Cup back in 2006 in Germany, the performance I remember the best is Zidane's against Brazil. I mean that was really out of this world stuff. He absolutely dominated everything in the middle of the park. What a joy to watch that was.
