You guys should get defenders quickly in time for Intertoto. You'll be up against the likes of Deportivo and Lazio.

Parker is a Magpie

SCOTT Parker has completed his move from Chelsea to Newcastle United after successfully completing a medical on Tyneside on Wednesday.

Parker, who joined Chelsea from Charlton 18 months ago, becomes Graeme Souness' first signing of the summer and admits he can't wait to kick-start his career at Gallowgate after a frustrating time at Stamford Bridge.

"I'm delighted to be joining Newcastle," Parker told nufc.co.uk.

"As soon as Chelsea made it clear they were prepared to let me leave, I was keen on this move.

"I have played here a few times, and I know how big the club is. I was very impressed with the manager, he was a major factor behind my decision to come here.

"I was also impressed with the chairman, and I just get the right vibes about the whole place. I can't wait to get started now."

He added: "It has been frustrating for me at Chelsea. I was a key figure at Charlton and playing every week, and then all of a sudden at Chelsea I wasn't a regular and had to get used to being on the sidelines.

"But that has made me a stronger person, and I don't leave Chelsea believing that I've failed. I have learned a lot there and developed as a player, and I'm confident you will see that at Newcastle next season.

"I'm not content with just sitting on the bench and playing a bit part. It was hard for me last season when Chelsea were doing so well and I wasn't really part of it

"I want to play, I have a hunger and a desire and maybe that is even stronger now because of what happened to me at Stamford Bridge.

"Chelsea is a club where trophies are part of the make-up. I have a desire to win things, and I feel that at Newcastle I can do that.

"The manager has given me a huge lift, I feel wanted again and I know I can do a good job here at Newcastle United."

Chairman Freddy Shepherd was delighted to tie up the signing of Parker, and says he will be a valuable addition to the squad.

"Scott has been our main target for a while, and we're delighted that he has chosen to join us," said Mr Shepherd.

"He is our first signing of the summer, and will be a valuable addition to our squad. He is still young but has a lot of experience, and we welcome him to Newcastle and look forward to seeing him in a black and white shirt."

you have a bargain there geordies, having seen him come through the ranks at charlton he has the potential to be as good as gerrard. Hope he works out for you, wish he were in a cafc shirt again next season but hey thats life!

i think Matt Upson would be a great signing for 'castle, he's always been underrated in my opinion. Wenger was a fool to let him go.

Souey to decide Bellamy fate
Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd says the St James' Park door is not closed to Craig Bellamy, but insists the decision on whether the Welsh firebrand plays for The Magpies again is down to Graeme Souness.

Bellamy appeared to seal his Newcastle fate when criticising Souness in a Sky Sports News interview, paving the way for his loan move to Celtic.

The flying forward was a big hit in Glasgow, but The Bhoys failed to exercise the option they had to sign the player and his future is now up in the air.

Aston Villa, Birmingham and Blackburn have all been linked with summer bids, but no deal has been agreed and Bellamy is due to report back for training on July 4.

Bellamy's on-pitch qualities were sorely missed on Tyneside in the second half of the season and Shepherd would appear to be ready to bury the hatchet, but it would appear as if Souness will have the final say.

"You will have to ask the manager that one, that is up to Graeme, but there is a long way to go yet before the start of the season," Shepherd told BBC Five Live.

"Everybody will tell you I am a forgiving chap; whether or not he plays for Newcastle again is up to the manager."

Commenting on whether Bellamy will return for pre-season training, Shepherd added: "I think he is lying on a beach at this moment, and good luck to him.

"That is what is happening to him at the moment and he is due back on July 4, so we will see what happens then.

"But in football, anything can happen."

I really hope they can put it behind them because it's gona be hard to replace a talented player like bellas, but if souness has such an ego that he can't forget and forgive then he will leave.

Magpies in Figo talks

Sky Sports News understand Newcastle are in talks to sign Real Madrid star Luis Figo.

Figo looks set to leave Real Madrid this summer as he does not appear to be in coach Wanderley Luxemburgo's first-team plans.

The Portuguese ace lost his place in the side at the back end of last season with Michael Owen squeezing him out of the side.

Figo still has 12 months left on his contract at Real, but he has indicated he will not be happy if he is forced to sit on the bench.

The news has alerted a number of clubs across Europe with Liverpool, Bolton and Valencia all linked with the skilful winger.

It is believed that Figo has instructed his advisors to help find a new club and it appears England could be his destination.

Figo has never hidden his desire to try his luck in The Premiership and Newcastle could be ready to offer him that opportunity.

Magpies boss Graeme Souness is keen to bring in high-profile signings after a disappointing campaign last term and it is believed he is in negotiations with Figo.

Souness will be hoping he can persuade the former Barcelona star to make the move to Tyneside and his possible arrival would provide a major lift ahead of the new season.

I doubt that Figo will go to Newcastle because of their absence from europe, and i can't imagine that Bobby Robson would give them a decent recommendation after the way he was treated.

IMO Man U is more likely with the heavy Portugese influence their.

Man u don't want him, all big premiership clubs have turned him down and he don't wana go anywhere but premiership, and he is quoted on sky sports news as sayin he wants 2 join us so ...

Vinnie Jones

Senior Squad
All the big premiership clubs turn him down? Sure...where did you hear this? Do you have any sources? It´s quite the opposite. Btw he said he would love to play in the premiership and not that he would only play in the premiership. He has offers from top clubs from all over Europe and you think that he would come for Newcastle just because he wants to play in the premiership? That´s rubbish. First of all i doubt that they can pay his wages and second i already read on the portuguese newspapers, that one of the pre requisits for any club that wants to sign him, is that they must be in european competitions. If i was you i would lose your expectations of seeing Figo in Newcastle, it´s not going to happen.

Adriano7

Youth Team
well i was watchin sky sports news and it said his agent has visited the likes of arsenal manu, chelsea, liverpool and they are not interested mainly because of his age and wages, he has turned down the idea of playing in france, and doesn't want 2 go to qatar(who offered the most). Valencia were favorite but madrid are reluctant 2 sell afterpasst history of transfers negotiations. also if a club in spain want him they will have to pay a fee , whereas madrid will allow othe teams to have him on a free if they match wage requests.

I aint all that bothered because i think he is past it and would just be good experience but don't say newcastle aint got a chance because at the moment it is claimed we are leading the chase and a deal could be imminent.

Adriano7

anyway i'd much rather see bellamy back he is much better than figo atm.

What do newcastle fans think about the story at the top of the page?

TOON ARMY

Bellamy, bags of talent but i'm afraid the attitude is totally wrong. The amount of chances we've given him. His he worth another chance or do we cash in on him? 60% of me says the later of the two.

Figo's age is a concern. Might get one season out of him at best. Probably not worth it to be honest.

Vinnie Jones

Senior Squad
You are lying. English media has as much credibility as Fox News. His agent doesn´t have to visit anyone. Clubs chase Figo not the other way around. He doesn´t offer himself to any club and specially not a club like Newcastle. What can he get and achieve in Newcastle? You haven´t won a title in decades. Don´t act so goddamn high and mighty. He has been in top flight for more than a decade, been one of the most important players in both Real Madrid and Barça´s history and you think that he would conceed on anything just to go to Newcastle? Give me a break. Oh and don´t worry about what player you would rather get because by the looks of things, you won´t get any of them.

Adriano7

wooa! ok mate calm down, im just lookin out 4 my team reporting what i hear in the news in terms of who could or could not be playing 4 us. i agree with u it is most unlikely and usually skysports blow things outer purportion, it was just i was sittin watching it 4 ages and they convinced me in my half asleep mode.

o and BTW i think what convinced me was get this

"Figo says he wants to sign for newcastle united" it said that along the bottom(if u watch it u will know what i mean those blue boxes)
So ye Vinnie Jones you are probably correct it does seem like bull****

TOON ARMY

Hold on mate, why would we want him? He’s old, lacks pace and his wage demands are stupid. He’s worth 15k a week at best.

Good luck to him in Qatar with all the other has beans.

Vinnie Jones

Senior Squad
Sok i didn´t want to disrespect Newcastle either but i felt that you were being condescendent and patronizing to a player like Figo (which alongside Cristiano Ronaldo is one of my favourites). If he goes to Newcastle, it´s because he believes in Souness and Sheppard´s project, so best of luck to him, if he decides to go that way.

Vinnie Jones

Senior Squad
Yeah he is old and lacks pace but it seems to me that Newcastle want him right? God forbid that Figo would join your almighty Newcastle, Toon Army, he would be just jumping into the bandwagon of a club who is natural winner. Get off your high horse. Even old he is better and achieved waaaaaaaaay more than any player in your team. You should use that criteria with Shearer too because he is so young and fast.
