All the info, results etc. in this thread.

I think we stand a good chance of winning since we're the home country and have a good squad. I was actually planning to go to a match of Holland U20's but it was all sold out :( .

looks like Brasil will need to get their act together on this one. They sucked it up in qualifiers, and they are the current champs! So we need to get our game back if we expect to win

Australia have become something of an ever-present at FIFA Youth competitions. However, after what normally proves a simple-as-pie qualifying campaign, the Oceania heavyweights tend to falter in the finals. Lack of competition in the South Seas has often proven a significant stumbling block for Australia at every level of play.

Once again, the Young Socceroos tore a swath through their opposition en route to a 12 th berth at the FIFA World Youth Championship. But coach Ange Postecoglu will have the same problems he had in UAE 2003 in preparing a side to take on the world’s best after qualifying against some of the worst.

Having to play only five matches to reach Netherlands 2005, the Aussies were never really in trouble save for a determined scrap with Fiji. They scored 46 goals and conceded only 5.

Qualifying
Head coach Postecoglu ran through the usual chorus, claiming he would ‘take every opponent seriously’ before kicking off against the host Solomon Islands in Honiara. In the end though, his side strolled to a rampaging 12-1 win. Next up were tiny Tonga, and they faired even worse in the minnow stakes: losing out 19-0. A 9-2 romp against Vanuatu followed, before Fiji gave better account of themselves losing only 3-2. The final with the Solomons was better than the first meeting, but it finished 3-0 for the young men from Oz after a bit of regrettable crowd trouble. In all fairness, the stifling heat was a problem and the coach was sharp to use nearly every member of his squad to counter the weather’s potentially damaging effects.

Coach
Ange Postecoglou took over coaching responsibilities for the youth team before the FIFA World Youth Championship Argentina 2001. There, the team defeated Japan, but lost to Brazil at the first knockout stage. Having played in the 1985 finals in USSR, Postecoglou had bags of experience to bestow upon the Aussie youngsters. As a player he captained South Melbourne to only their second national championship in 1991, and went on to claim four international caps. Success as a coach came with the same club from the state of Victoria. Postecoglou guided South Melbourne to further championship successes in 1997/8 and 1998/9, victory at the Oceania club Championships and a berth at the inaugural FIFA Club World Championship Brazil 2000. He coached the Australian U-17 side at the FIFA U-17 World Championship Finland 2003 and the U-20’s at the last instalment of the FIFA World Youth Championship in UAE in 2003.

Star Player
Spase Dilevski is an iron-hard defender in the prototypical Aussie mold. Never shy in the tackle, his all-in play earned him a contract first at PSV and then Tottenham Hotspur, although he was released at the end of the 2004-5 season. Though it’s the forwards that get all the headlines in the qualifying campaigns Down Under, it could well be the cool head of young Dilevski at the back that determines whether the Aussies fail or prevail in the Lowlands this June. The six-footer is a veteran of the FIFA U-17 World Championship in Trinidad& Tobago in 2001, and he was also the youngest member of the Aussie team at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament in Athens last year.

Record

•Australia participated at 11 of fourteen editions of the FIFA World Youth Championship (and the last seven in a row).
•They are second in all-time FIFA World Youth Championship appearances behind Brazil.
•The Oceania reps have reached the semi-finals on two occasions - Portugal 91 and Australia 93.
The Aussies reached the quarter-finals last time out at UAE 2003

Quote
“We have been training hard, and the boys are eagerly anticipating this first game.” (Ange Postecoglu, in the run-up to the finals)

Go the Young Socceroos (H)!!!
