Haha, gotta love the pundits on Five. John Barnes - "Who needs Van Nistelrooy, when you've got someone that can finish like that (Evans)".

And the best bit is, he was being serious. (H)

McGeady had actually turned down the chance to play for United. He said United offered him a contract, but when Celtic came in, his mind was made up, so I would be suprised if I were you. :p

Eagles, on the other hand, may have a good game once a year but I really can't see him breaking into our first team. Should someone need a stream then here's a pretty decent one...need to use IE, though.

I think people have this preconception of Eagles because he doesn't appear to be the all-dribbling, all-pace winger that people expect. I think him and Martin compliment each other well but both have different styles of play, Martin shows alot more flair. I still thinkin Eagles has the potential and should be given the opportunity.

Having said that, he's just got subbed. Miller on. Boos from the Celtic fans (H)

Promising performance, I can see why Fergie is stalling on bringing in new faces, we have a lot of good youngsters, who knows one of them can play a big role in the near future, especially on the midfield, Richardson looked pacey, Martin had a lot of flair and a great cross

Great performance, we dominated the match completely against quite a strong Celtic side.

You really think that Carrick is the ideal replacement for Keano?? :o
Personally, I don't think there is any ONE player in the world at the moment who is an actual replacement for Keano in his prime. With that said, Carrick would be a good option as long as we sign a physical defensive midfielder with him. 17m pounds is too much though, 12m would be okay (but still hefty) for his talent.

I'll tell you now SAF isn't going to sign 2 central midfielders. And im not exactly suprised because Paul Scholes is looking impressive, 2 goals today, and i remember that unbelievable long ball he played in Africa that led to Kieran Richardsons goal. He is definitely starting in the centre of midfield, its just Man Utd now need that defensive player to compliment him and let him have freedom in midfield to pull the strings. All Man Utd need is one midfielder, if it was something like Mascherano + Scholes in midfield next year, I would be delighted.

True...we just need a midfielder, we have enough depth in our squad, except for the DM roll,

That sums up exactly why we can't just sign one player - ESPECIALLY if Carrick is that one player. Even if we get the best defensive midfielder in the world, that still makes Smith or O'Shea his replacement in case of injury. Since I haven't been able to watch the preseason matches, I haven't seen Scholes' form, but I'll go by the majority and say that it looks like he will be starting as an attacking midfielder (by ability, not by Fergie's decision). We can't hope to survive without a player who can defend for 1.5 people, since the Ginger Prince's defensive abilities have apparently all faded and made way for his attacking skills. Carrick always struck me as more of a natural center midfielder who can drift forward and drift backwards, but with Carrick and Scholes together in midfield, I feel our backline would be far too exposed. In fact, it would possibly be more exposed than with Scholes and Smith, because Smith plays a defensive role - although not brilliantly by any means.

These are our options for the center of the park next year:

Scholes, *Carrick*, Fletcher, Giggs, *Smith*, Jones, Miller

A lot of names, including Carrick who's not ours, and Smith who will probably be a striker again. However, how many of these players would you trust defensively in THIS upcoming season? Giggs? Scholes? Fletch? Jones? Miller? Personally, I don't trust any of them besides from a more defensive-minded Carrick, and I only "trust" Smith because he seems to be a fifth defender rather than a midfielder when he plays. Not a slam on Smudger, I'd rather him do that than get burnt trying to actually replace Keano as a box-to-box player.

I just heard that Ruud's transfer saga is over, he's off to Madrid for 10.3 million pounds that will be paid over 3 years

I want to see Jones getting a chance to prove himself in the DM roll, you never know....

Have you actually watched Carrick play? He is perfect at covering the defense and complimenting Scholes. Plus Carrick's passing abilities are incredible, i can't believe anyone hasn't mentioned that. He may not be that phyiscal, but he's not scared of getting stuck in and can be equally effective holding United's midfield as someone else with a more aggressive nature.

Smith, O'Shea and Jones are adequate options for cover imo. Both Smith and O'Shea can play their competently and Jones is definately and up and coming player with some points to prove in the first team.

where did you hear that? cos fergie himself said before the game tonite he was aware of the bid by Real but Gill hadnt contacted him about it, and i cant see us accepting 10.3 over 3 year when reals first offer was £10m upfornt and even bayern are prepared to pay £12m at the moment

well its not any any sites yet and i woyuld have thought it would be seeing as it took them about 2 minutes to get a write up of the match, i really dont see why we would take £10/3 over 3 years compared to the orgianl offer of £10m straight up seems a bit stupid to say the least

If you consider Celtic beat Everton 1-0 in a friendly recently. And a youthful Man Utd beat Celtic 3-0, things aren't looking bad for the upcoming season. Although a defensive midfielder signing is critical, people need to remember this squad did come second in the premiership only to the Russians, and the experience gained by the youngsters of the last season (rooney, ronaldo...) only means this squad has improved so far, especially now we have Heinze and Scholes back.

I agree it is really weird to see the number 16 shirt number vacant Keano will be sorely missed unless you are Alf Inge Haaland. It is still hard after nearly 4 years to see the number 7 shirt at united not emblazoned with Beckham (which i believe led to the fall of United's dominance of the EPL) RVN has missed the regular service he received whilst Beckham played on the right. I am also amazed at how many people are on this site who support Man Utd. However without looking it up I wonder how many of these so called fans can name the starting lineup for the 1999 Champions League Final? I find that is the true test of a Man Utd fan as i have come across many bandwagoners who follow only successful teams just like people did in the 80s with
