I posted this in another thread where that guy was asking what epl team he should support. I thought I'd share it with you guys. It'd be nice if everyone else shared their stories as well.
I totally agree with you.
Living in the US, I never really got a chance to watch any soccer. One day my mom calls me downstairs because Figo is being awarded the World Player of the Year award on the portuguese news. Believe it or not, at that time I had no idea who he was. Regardless, seeing a portuguese person being awarded such a great honor filled my heart with national pride. I decided to learn all about Figo and that of course led me to Real Madrid.
At the time, Fox Sports World was the only channel(other than a rare CL game on ESPN2) that had games. I started watching EPL and Bundesliga games while following Real Madrid on the internet. I grew to like watching Manchester United and Bayern Munich games, but they never got me as nervous or excited as waiting for a score to update on Real Madrid's website. By luck I found a restraunt that showed all the Real Madrid matches from a Latin ESPN. It was a pain in the ass going there, cause I would have to buy lunch and then eat it real slow for 2 hours. Luckily GolTV was created and everything became alot easier.
When Figo finally left Real Madrid last year, it had no impact on me at all. At some point in the first season that I followed Real Madrid, it stopped being about Figo and it became a passion for the club. Everytime we score I jump out of my seat and cheer. Everytime we are wronged I curse uncontrolably. Real Madrid is part of my life now and is bigger than any one player. It started very humbly with an interest in Figo and turned into a club that I will support until the day I die.
Real Madrid chose me that day my mom called me downstairs.

For example, I started supporting Barca when I accidentally saw them play a Champions League match. I saw them at my cousin's house because he was watching the match. I didn't know what the Champions League was, didn't know who the team in grey were (Barca, away kits), I asked my cousin about that particular team, and he told me: "Barcelona". They just caught my eye, you know? Everything about them.. They lost that match, and it was a downer, even though it was the first time I had seen them play. Then I started watching Barcelona everytime I could.. And now they're the only team I support. Man, I love them more than my NT. When they lose, I don't watch football until their next league game. If they lose a CL match on Tuesday, I don't watch the match shown on Wednesday.. that's the kind of love that couldn't develop had I chose them. They have chosen me in a way..
My advice is, watch those seven teams play, and you'll develop an affection for one or more.
