The "Real quotes from college-level political science papers" Thread

#1:

It does not seem likely that we would trade with city-leagues today. We have nations like the Cherokee or the Kurds that are not states and we do not trade with them. Our form of currency today is a result of the failure of which ruler got to mint what coins during the city-league days.

I sh*t you not.

Please, please, please keep this up!

I don't think I've ever heard the term "city-league" before, is it equivalent to city-state?

These are the most nonsensical 3 sentences I have ever heard. I assume the last 2 sentences are properly cited.... HAHAHAHAHAHA!

The really sad thing is that Illinois is a good school, you can't just walk in.

Well, he's referring to (now defunct) trade alliances like the Hanseatic League. I don't know if that quote makes more or less (if that's possible) sense now that you know that.

I know, it's kind of depressing when you think about it. UIUC is supposed to be one of the top public educational institutions in the country (although that probably says more about public universities than it does about UIUC). I think it's like this in all the major public research universities though. There's a pretty wide spectrum of students - some are really bright, some are mediocre, and some... well, look at the quotes.

Wisconsin and UIUC are as close in admitted student quality, department quality, and demographics as two schools can be. I knew many morons in the same classes as me.

I'm afraid that that is the reason why they are in college and in political science.

Unless, they look at those kind of students differently in USA than in Canada.

Well here's the thing: Shifty is a first year graduate student and TA, so it's not like he's leading some upperclass seminar here. If you're criticizing the intelligence of political science majors.... 100 level Poli Sci classes are probably over 50% non-poli sci majors. It's just a regular Gen Ed class that everyone takes. So presumably your "smart" philosophy and math and engineering majors are also in this class.

Ok, maybe math and Engineering students because of their over reliance on one letter, but Philosophers? They have no excuse to f*ck up on their English. That's all they have to express themselves.

Who teaches these people to write?

Well, I don't know anything about political science at UIUC, but it's a totally different story in CS. It's so competitive it's not even funny. The class average in most of my classes (based on assignments, homework, etc.. so far) is something close to an A-..
I got pleased when I got a 59/59 grade in one long and challenging assignment. Then I checked the class average, it was 57.5/59. WTF?

Here in Canada, most 70% average students or slackers go into poli sci, so the program itself doesn't teach much. All you do is basically look at past events and see how they turned out. While, philosophy is even worse, its just for total duds.

PS. I'm talking about undergraduate level though, not graduate.
