I dont see Di Natale leaving, he was kind of a letdown this season. Maybe they'll be able to draw some decent players, seeing as they have the pull of a CL spot.

And ya, I wouldve rather had Samp get the spot, nobody would leave, and theyd probably add Recoba. All they had to do was beat Bologna on final day, and they blew it.

In other news, Frey is being linked to Fiorentina and Lazio may sign Paul Le Guen (former Lyon) as their new coach, but he'd have to take a paycut, seeing as Lazio pays their players with similar salaries as to an MLS team. Dellas could join Rangers on free (Roma shouldve cashed in last summer).

Spalletti quits Udinese post
Tuesday 7 June, 2005
Luciano Spalletti has officially resigned as Coach of Udinese, paving the way for his move to Roma and starting the search for his replacement.

“Spalletti has formalised his resignation in a letter,” revealed director of sport Pietro Leonardi this evening.

“We cannot talk of a split, but rather of the tactician’s clearly expressed desire for a change of scenery. If he wants to join Roma then that is a problem to be sorted out between the Giallorossi and him.”

The situation had been clear for several days, but Udinese tried to smooth over the cracks by offering Spalletti an improved contract or even a new directorial position similar to that of Arrigo Sacchi at Real Madrid.

Now it is only a matter of hours before the former Empoli and Sampdoria Coach completes his move to Roma.

Spalletti had said his desire to leave Udinese was linked in with their extraordinarily successful fourth-place finish, as he could not live up to the promise of providing Champions’ League qualification every season.

“Udinese, as President Giampaolo Pozzo has said many times, simply wishes to settle itself into the higher end of Serie A mid-table status,” insisted director Leonardi.

“That doesn’t mean finishing third or fourth, but trying to stay in that general area and always attempting to do our best.”

Alberto Zaccheroni this week rejected the possibility of a return to the Stadio Friuli, so the race is on to find Spalletti’s replacement before the Champions’ League preliminary round.

“Undoubtedly we are now looking around and are convinced we can solve the issue quickly. Our new Coach must not revolutionise the existing tactical set-up, so he has to have a similar viewpoint to the one that brought us such success. The European challenge ensures we’ll need a tactician who has experience at the highest level.”

The Udinese director also hinted that a move for Atalanta’s Under-21 international Marco Motta was on the cards, though negotiations are continuing.

he can't guarantee udine a CL spot every season yet at roma, we're looking for a coach who can guarantee us a CL spot every season

i'd take zeman over him

I dont think Spaletti will do that well with Roma. With the squad Udinese had, and the meltdown of Roma this season, it wasnt that hard an achievement for Udinese to get the 4th CL spot.

Hopefully they reconsider and hire Zeman instead. Or maybe Udinese can pick up Zeman now.

Serie A Team Of The Season
6/8/2005 12:28:00 PM
Here goes the Goal.com team of the season for the 2004/2005 Serie A campaign.
Serie A Team of the season (4-4-2):

Dida – It was always going to be a choice between the Brazilian shot stopper and Buffon, and the pick fell on Dida. Reason? Taking into consideration that they are both fantastic goalkeepers and maybe overall Buffon is better than Dida, throughout this season the Milan keeper was more consistent and proved decisive for the Rossoneri more than the Italian international was for the Bianconeri.

Cafu – His identity card says that he is 35 years old, yet he runs up and down the right side of the pitch as much (if not more) than a 20 year old does. Incredible stamina and speed for such a veteran player. Devastating with his accelerations and very important in Milan’s tactics.

Nesta – The Italian international rarely gets a match wrong, and when he does, the whole rearguard suffers. Fundamental and precious for Milan and the Azzurri as Lippi hopes that the former Lazio player can hold his form even next year for the 2006 World Cup. Unbeatable in anticipating opponents and always elegant in his movements.

Cannavaro – Many thought he was finished after two mediocre seasons with Inter, but then the move to Juventus proved fruitful both for the Bianconeri and the Italian national team captain. Rejuvenated as he found back his best form, leading the Bianconeri’s defence in being Italy’s least beaten rearguard.

Zambrotta – If consistency had a name it would be Zambrotta. Runs up and down the left hand side for the whole 90 minutes, proving important both for the offensive and defensive department. A fountain of crosses and assists. Unstoppable when he accelerates past the defenders.

Camoranesi – The Italian/Argentinean right winger was always regarded as a highly technical but inconsistent player. After this season he will be remembered as a technical and consistent player. Improved immensely as he became the most important player (along with Emerson) in the Juve midfield. His flair and sparks of genius turned on the style for the Bianconeri.

Emerson – A lot of dirty work and a great ball winner, bridging the defence and midfield. He might not be as technical or full of quality as other players in his role, but his quantity level is extremely high. An injury in the latter part of the season decreased his output, but nevertheless he fought back to help Juventus clinch its 28th league title.

Cambiasso – Another great defensive midfielder which Real Madrid let go. Everyone knew he was a good player, but no one believed he would be THAT good in his first season at Inter. Incredible all-round midfielder and probably one of the best revelations of this season.

Veron – He failed to make an impact in England, but on his return to Italy he proved why he was, and still is, regarded as one of the best attacking midfielders around. Great vision and technical qualities place him as one of the best Serie A midfielders.

Shevchenko – Has been playing consistently well for the past 2 and a half years. A complete forward and deservedly won the Golden Ball award last December. 22 goals (17 in Serie A and 5 in the Champions League) scored, despite suffering a terrible head injury and being sidelined for 6 weeks.

Ibrahimovic – He might not be the new Van Basten but he showed his class and (unexpected) goal scoring abilities to net 16 goals and provide a good number of assists for a fantastic season. If he can improve his finishing he will become one of the best players in the world, but he is still young and has room for improvement.

Ive actually been meaning to make my own version of Team of The Season.

Mikey's Team Of The Season

Dida: Him and Buffon were both the main candidates, but throughout the season Dida was just more important to Milan, which probably speaks more about Juve's great defence more than anything else.

Cannavaro (CM): The best defender on the best team in the league, who won the scudetto because of their defence. He's my 2004-2005 Serie A MVP. I know there were other factors, but just look at Juve's defence this season, compared to last season.

Nesta (CM): Milan had the second best defence this season, and he was far more consistent that Stam and more effective than Maldini.

Zambrotta (LB): Along with Cannavaro, he's the one Juve player you can always count on having a huge game. The best LB in the world, it has to be undisputed at this point. He's become so accustomed to his 'new' LB role that he seems out of place when put into his old favoured outside midfield position.

Cassetti (RB): A defender from the worst team in Serie A making my best 11? If you saw this guy all season youd know why. As vital to Lecce's great attack as anybody else. There's a reason why hes being linked with Juve and Milan. With the Azzurri's obvious weakness at RB (Bonera is current starter) I hope Lippi gives him a proper chance as I think he could take the place.

==============================================================

Cambiasso (DM): what the hell were Real Madrid thinking? by midseason, Cambiasso displaced J.Zanetti and Adriano and became Inter's most valuable and crucial player. I'll admit I was surprised at how well he played, and kept Davids out of the side.

Pizarro (CM): by far, the undisputed best playmaker in Italy this season. Its about time he made the jump to a bigger club. A couple years ago i said he was as good as Deco, and now I think hes better.

Camoranesi (AM): Rebounded after a patchy season and an even worse Euro 2004. For an attacking player, he gives a hell of a lot of effort on defensive end. In many of Juve's best games this season, Camo was most likely one of the main reasons.

===============================================================

Zlatan (F): Maybe there was a handful of guys ahead of him on scoring charts, but no other attacker in Italy did as much for his team this season as him. For the first half of the season, he was mainly a distributor and creating most of Juve's attack when Nedved was out and Del Piero was having his usual garbage performances. In the second half, Zlatan 'found out' how to score in the Serie A and the goals started to come more often. He deserves a better partner next season, whether its Cassano, Mutu or Gilardino. I just hope he'll reject the attention Real Madrid and Chelsea will start to show. There Is Only One Zlatan.

Gilardino (ST): After Cannavaro, he was the next logical choice for MVP. Proved last season was no fluke, and established himself as one of the top strikers in the world. Id hate to see his playing time suffer from a move to Milan, but Im sure with better collective service this wont be a problem.

Shevchenko (ST): Narrowly kept Toni out of my top team, and only because he missed a hanful of games through injury. There's no better striker in the world at the moment, and Im glad he'll finally get to play at the World Cup next summer.

================================================================

Bench:

Buffon - credit to the players in front of him that he didnt have as much oppurtunities to shine

Falcone - the leader of Samps great defence, which almost produced CL birth.

Thuram - Lippi shouldve probably moved him to CB last season when the others werent getting the job done

Emerson - A great season, and definately key to Juve's scudetto. I just dont think he had the same impact he did at Roma.

Gattuso - The typical great stuff from Rino. Has finally paved his way into regular starter for Azzurri. I only kept him out of starting lineup because there was just too many good attackers this season.

Morfeo - by far the most underrated player in the Serie A. Gilardino gets all the attention, but Morfeo is the one who creates a fair share of the goals. Desperately deserves a callup to NT. He could potentially be Totti's backup as playmaker.

Di Michele - Many of Pizarro's great balls were turned in majestically by him. Almost all of his goals were highlight reel material

Toni - Cemented his place on NT. I see no way how Lippi can opt for Vieri over Toni as Gilardino alternative. One of the best strikers in the world with his back to the net, where he seemed to score a lot of his goals.

Lucarelli - well the top scorer has to be given some credit, especially when hes playing for Livorno

El Merengue Argentino
Great to see Seba on that list.

I wonder if he has a chance of being called up for the World Cup . . .

You always said Deco sucked, even when he was being hailed as one of the best players in the world.

Have you seen Pizarro play this season? Comparing him to Deco is by no means an insult at all. Im not gonna go into detail about Deco, as Ive already done so in the past.
