Genoa Match-Fixing Scandal Kicks It Up A Notch

Anxiously awaiting their fate, Genoa have now launched accusations of a pre-meditated campaign against them and asked for the match-fixing trial to be scrapped.

The club has been demoted to Serie C1 and docked three points as a result of a match-fixing enquiry into the final game of the season, a 3-2 victory over Venezia that put them into the top flight.

Their appeal was heard by the CAF (Federal Court of Appeal) on Friday and a verdict is expected between this evening and Monday morning, but the entire situation could be plunged into uncertainty yet again.

“On Friday, while our lawyers were stating their case, some of the CAF judges were passing each other little notes than were then torn up and put in the bin,” accused President Enrico Preziosi in a dramatic Press Conference.

“This was all caught on camera and everyone noticed the odd behaviour. We fished the pieces out and put them back together again. The notes said, ‘Exclude from Serie B. The Federal Counsel will then assign them to either C1, C2 or the amateur Leagues.’ As you can see, the verdict was written before we even got the chance to state our case.”

Preziosi even photocopied the torn shreds of paper and passed them out to the members of the Press, demanding that the CAF trial be made null and void.

“We ask the sporting justice system to give dignity back to a trial that has certainly lost sight of its principles,” added lawyer Crippa. “We believe that the only course of action is to wipe out the entire procedure and start again.”

The evidence against Genoa piled up over the weeks since a Venezia general manager was caught leaving Preziosi’s office with a suitcase that contained £170,000 cash.

It was claimed this was an advance for Ruben Maldonado’s move, but the player knew nothing of the transfer. A series of telephone conversations between Preziosi and Venezia President Franco Dal Cin were also taped.

========================================================

Is anyone else dying of the thought of 65 year old Italian business men passing notes, whispering sweet nothings into eachothers ears and giggling as they point and laugh at Genio President Preziosi. Than Preziosi standing up outraged yelling, "you guys are just a bunch of c*cks!" and running out of room in tears. Just me?

anyways, Genoa should seriously consider hiring Erin Brockovich to tackle this case

Genoa in trouble again

Genoa fans protested their teams forced relegations by forcing the abandonment of a Coppa Italia match against Catanzaro.

The historic club had only fielded a youth team, as they continue their appeal against the decision to relegate them to Serie C over a match fixing scandal.

The Genovan club's fans are up in arms at the decision and rained fire crackers down on the pitch.

With the score at 0-0, the match was abandoned with just 25 minutes on the clock.

It could well cause further repercussions for the troubled club, with suggestions that they could now be kicked out of the cup for the season.

this is officially out of control

Rossoblu relegation confirmed
by Chris Stanton - created on 8 Aug 2005

GenoaGenoa's relegation to Serie C1 has been confirmed after the Federal Appeal Commission upheld an earlier verdict.

Last week the League's Disciplinary Commission ruled that Genoa face relegation after investigating the alleged case of match fixing concerning the final game of last season's Serie B against Venezia.

The result, a 3-2 Genoa success, should have guaranteed the Rossoblu Serie A football for the forthcoming campaign but following a failed appeal they will now turn out in the third tier of Italian football.

The Federal Appeal Commission have also imposed a three-point penalty for the forthcoming campaign.

Genoa club president Enrico Preziosi, general manager Stefano Capozucca and Venezia official Franco Dal Cin have all been banned from club activity for five years.

The Commission also meted out severe penalties for the players involved with Massimo Borghello receiving a five-month ban and Martin Lejsal a six-month suspension.

Genoa have continued to court further controversy after their supporters threw flares on the pitch, forcing the abandonment of a Coppa Italia tie on Sunday.

It now seems likely that the club will face further sanctions for their supporters' indiscretions, who have reacted to Genoa's demotion by disrupting transport services.

So, if Torino is reinstated to Serie A (likely), who would get the final Serie A spot? Bologna or Treviso? How would they even much such a decision?

How did Crespo get put into such a class group like that :sb9:

Messina safe, Toro turfed out

Messina have won their final appeal and will play in Serie A, but the top flight closes its doors to Torino.

The Sicilian club had originally been excluded from the Division due to financial irregularities, but the TAR tribunal of Lazio accepted their appeal that the paperwork was valid and today’s State Counsel decision also went their way.

Bologna and the FIGC had lodged motions to push Messina out of Serie A, a move which would’ve promoted the Rossoblu in their place.

“This is a great victory for sport,” stated Messina President Pietro Franza. “My first thoughts are for the players who have suffered and held out during this pre-season uncertainty. There were moments of real tension, but they are over now. It’s our duty to win back the credibility that our image has lost in recent weeks and strengthen the squad in the final days of the transfer market.”

Torino were not so fortunate, as their appeal has again been rejected and the club will not be able to play in Serie A this season. The Granata’s registration included a bank draft covering a £26m debt, but it later proved to be false. Accepting that Toro were not aware of this, they were given extra time to find the financial guarantees, but were unable to do so.

“Tomorrow we will present a new bank draft and, though I don’t know what it’ll achieve, it will at least show we acted in good faith,” said President Attilio Romero. “We do not deny our responsibilities, but we did everything possible to resolve the matter. We ran into continual obstacles when we were so close to a conclusion.”

The Stadio Delle Alpi squad will nonetheless apply for the ‘Lodo Petrucci’, a rule allowing a bankrupt club to start again in a lower Division with new owners, so Torino will return to Serie B despite their promotion.

Perugia and Salernitana have also been excluded from Serie B, while Benevento (C1), Imolese and Rosetana (C2) are ruled out. The State Counsel did accept the appeals put forward by Gela and Sassari Torres, who will play in Serie C1.

With the Lodo Petrucci in mind, Perugia can drop down to Serie C1, while Napoli’s many appeals against a series of clubs have not helped them emerge from the same Division.

MILAN, Italy (AP) - The Mediaset group owned by Premier Silvio Berlusconi won the rights to show Italian soccer highlights on free TV with a bid of ?61.57 million (US$74.46 million) Saturday.

The three-season contract - lasting through June 30, 2008 - signals an end for state broadcaster RAI's "90th Minute'' highlight show, which has become a cultural institution over the years.

RAI said it only made a symbolic ?100 (US$120.93) offer to retain the rights, and instead renewed its contract for the revised Italian Cup with a ?26 million (US$31.44 million) bid.

Games from Italy's top Serie A league are shown live only on pay TV - either Rupert Murdoch's Sky Italia satellite service or via pay-per-view through Mediaset or La 7, the TV network of telecommunications giant Telecom Italia.

With no live games on free TV, huge numbers of fans turn to the highlights shown on free TV immediately after matches conclude. Those highlights will now be available only on Mediaset.

"For RAI not to have '90th Minute' is serious, we're talking about a symbolic program,'' said longtime RAI soccer commentator Bruno Pizzul, according to the ANSA news agency.

Critics of the bid process cited what they believed to be a conflict of interest between the league and Mediaset. League president Adriano Galliani is also the president of AC Milan, which is also owned by Berlusconi.

Antonio Marano, who acquires sports rights for RAI, said "RAI didn't lose, it decided to lose.''

Marano said RAI focused on the Italian Cup, "which represents a prime time product for us.''

The Italian Cup has been revised for this season along the lines of Cup tournaments in England and France. It includes a direct knockout format for the first few rounds with squads from each of the top three divisions, designed to set up meetings between big and small clubs.

The top eight finishers have byes until the round of 16.

Galliani said he was "very pleased and satisfied'' with an increase in combined revenue from the highlights and Italian Cup from ?62 million (US$74.98 million) to ?87.5 million (US$105.81 million).
