This tournament was finally announced today, and it is nothing but fantastic news in my opinion.

The "Superliga" will be structured like the UEFA champions cup, consisting of 8 teams, 4 from the MLS, 4 from the Mexica Primera Division. There will be a groups phase, with two groups, and elimination phase. As this will be the first year, all the teams currently in are there by invite but for the next year they want to make it by qualification only (i.e champions of each league).

The groups will be:
GROUP A

Chivas

Dallas

Los Angeles Galaxy

Pachuca

GROUP B

América

DC United

Houston Dinamo

Morelia

The Winning team will take just $1 million dollars as the main prize, and the title of Champion of North America ( <- Not Concacaf, as central america will be excluded).

Why does this tournament matter?
The MLS needs this to grow internationally at club level. They will not have a chance of getting to the WCC without knowing how take out some of the best teams in North America, and if they do well in this cup they can start thinking seriously again about sudamericana and libertadores. This might be their gateway to international recognition.

Plus Mexican teams have been waiting for a real competition in our region. This just might be it, considering the intense rivalry between the two nations.

The tournaments starts Tuesday July 24.
Guess what one of the games on the first day will be?
Galaxy - Chivas Guadalajara at the Home Depot Center, with the almost guaranteed debut of David Beckham.

Believe me, I'll be on the front row.

Sounds like a crappy tournament, i doubt mexican clubs are gonna take it seriously, its another attempt of FMF to take advantage of "los paisanos", seems like they dont have enough with that stupid Interliga and all those useless Friendly games for the NT.

We have already a lot of non-sense tournaments that limits our best teams to participate at Libertadores and in their best form (the real competition), CONCACAF Champions League( Absorbs our best teams ex. Chivas and Pachuca), Interliga... pff pure crap., if we still in this path i dont see any mexican team winning a Libertadores in the near future

I hate FMF ( money whores)

True.

Mexican teams will have it like this for this year.

Interliga
Clausura 2007
Concacaf Champions Cup
Libertadores
Superliga
Apertura 2007
Sudamericana
WCC?

But this tournament can also have a positive effect.
1 million dollar prize.
More money equals -> more expensive players mexican teams can buy.
More money + good competition equals -> our teams become stronger.

I doubt it that our teams that are participating are going to want to loose to an MLS team.

I still think its useless, yeah maybe financially talking it would be positive, but think about it for big teams 1 million its not such a big deal, it would be attractive for smaller teams like Atlante,Tecos, etc. that dont have any other international exposure(lets face it they would rarely qualify for this), but then again FMF dont wany small teams playing that tournament, so the'll fin a gay to give it mostly to "big" teams

It would also be great even if they just bring in the younger players.
Chivas has more than enough I would love to see play in more serious tournaments, so they can finally make it to that next level.

I still don't know why Morelia is in it, I guess Cruz Azul and Pumas declined to participate.

Cuz there is a big community of "Michoacanos" , thats why i herd, and that the reason (Money always Money haha)

From an American point of view I see this as only good news for the MLS and soccer in the US. This tournament will give the MLS teams more exposure and more experience against solid Mexican clubs which like Shiryu said might be a help for them eventually stepping up to the Libertadores. Two complaints though: 1 is why are all the games played in the US and 2 why is ESPN or Fox not getting in on this? The matches will be televised live by Univision in the US.

Cuz in Mexico wouldnt be a very attractve tournament to go see on a stadium, so FMF made this tournament to make $$$ using the Mexicans living at the US giving the the "chance" of wattching their temas Live

useless tournament, added to an already saturated Mexican teams and players schedules. just shows the greedy money whores of the Mexican federation specially "La Rata' decio de maria and "el Pelonas" cantu. Didn't they get enough with the last 4 years of sponsors 100 million in benefits plus the new 4 years with 8 year contract with Adidas worth 80 million....

1. Most probably because they just want to see what kind of impact it will have first.

2. Because Univision signed the tournament as exclusive to them in the U.S. for this year. Who knows, maybe if its popular ESPN might pick it up next year.

I hope they will show most games on Univision (which I have) and not Telefutura (which I don't have). It's gonna be great listening to those Mexigan guys again :mexican:

is it possible that the mls teams could join the libertadores?!?! it would be sick to get a metrostars team i mean red bulls down here in brazil against a top team like cruzeiro, or even the galaxy squad down here in a libertadores cup match.

I'm gonna watch both of those matches. I'm actually excited about this, the presentation is all class and you can tell that they want to make this as serious a competition as you can have. I hope it succeeds.

Too bad I'll miss the first game, should be a good one. But at least I'll get to see the Galaxy get demolished by Pachuca later on.

FC Dallas are just getting worked by the ref in the second half. Chivas' equalizing goal involved a clear handball. Now they sent off Moor for retaliating to an elbow by a Chivas player. Moor deserved the red, but it would have never happened if the original foul was called to begin with.
