This tournament was finally announced today, and it is nothing but fantastic news in my opinion.
The "Superliga" will be structured like the UEFA champions cup, consisting of 8 teams, 4 from the MLS, 4 from the Mexica Primera Division. There will be a groups phase, with two groups, and elimination phase. As this will be the first year, all the teams currently in are there by invite but for the next year they want to make it by qualification only (i.e champions of each league).
The groups will be:
GROUP A
Chivas
Dallas
Los Angeles Galaxy
Pachuca
GROUP B
América
DC United
Houston Dinamo
Morelia
The Winning team will take just $1 million dollars as the main prize, and the title of Champion of North America ( <- Not Concacaf, as central america will be excluded).
Why does this tournament matter?
The MLS needs this to grow internationally at club level. They will not have a chance of getting to the WCC without knowing how take out some of the best teams in North America, and if they do well in this cup they can start thinking seriously again about sudamericana and libertadores. This might be their gateway to international recognition.
Plus Mexican teams have been waiting for a real competition in our region. This just might be it, considering the intense rivalry between the two nations.
The tournaments starts Tuesday July 24.
Guess what one of the games on the first day will be?
Galaxy - Chivas Guadalajara at the Home Depot Center, with the almost guaranteed debut of David Beckham.
Believe me, I'll be on the front row.
