I don't think 'they' as in the fans truly believe they will win any tournaments they have competed in since the '70 World Cup. The newspapers, particularly the tabloids, whip up this fever of hope in people, getting 'big football names' to say how great England's chances are, before writing off the entire team when they don't live up to the paper's stratospheric expectations. As an England fan myself, I usually feel a bit down after England lose a big game, but I didn't get that after the Portugal game, probably because I'd been bracing myself for a 3-0er all week so the 3-2 was a pleasant surprise. I think England can get out of their group, but win it? Don't be daft. I will sob uncontrollably into my beer should we lose against Germany though...

Oh by the way, it's spelled French Guiana, and they are NOT a colony but a nation. man, are you up to date or what? i would've though you lived during the late 1800s. look man, there's no such thing as colonies anymore. islands that are dominated by another nation (which is VERY rare, such as Guam or something) aren't called colonies, but something nicer. and if i remember correctly, French Guiana does have its own national team. so does surinam and guyana. don't quote me on that though.

viera might have moved to france when he was young but that doesn't change anything. i moved to turkey when i was young, but i'm not turkish. my friend moved there when he was 11 months, but he considers himself spanish.

a lot of african people have french names, but that's because of the french influence. it doesn't necessary mean they have french blood.

your explanations for boghossian and djorkaeff and zidane are also a little spotty and amateuristic, but whatever.

All I am saying is that European teams should consist of Europeans, which means white players. Why do you think blacks are called africans, because they are from africa not europe. What will happen if one day all the national teams consist of different races and nationalities. There will be no difference between them and club teams. Actually I support Italy since my parents are Italian. Italy has won 3 world cups last I looked. How many has france won, just 1 and that was only because they were playing at home. So it looks like my national team actually has played at a higher level than frances. Also, my team actually consists of real Italians. The pathetic french on the other hand can only win games by importing players because they aren't good enough to win on their own.

I don't agree with assius in any way but i do agree that players should play for the country that THEY are born in, regardless of parentage.

The only thing that should be able to change that rule is if the child moved to a new country during the first say, 5/10 years of their life.

It is true that some players decide to play for teams because they believe themselves better than that national team. For example, Michael Owen was BORN in Wales and with a name like Owen, should be in the Welsh National team. However, he knew that he would get more recognition playing for England and did play for them.

Even though Ryan Giggs hardly plays for the Welsh National team, he still plays for his national team, where he was born and raised. He had the chance to play for England but he was man enough to stay with his roots.

The rule should be:

1. A player can only play for the National Team of the Country they were born in.

2. Unless, the player has been living in a country since a certain age. Say X yrs old.

3. Players cannot adopt the Nationality of ANY relatives. Only their own will count.


The reason I think this is because I do believe that lesser countries are developing far slower due to players playing for a different and more developed nation. If they stayed with the right nation, they would develop properly.

Nothing here to do with colour. If u are Black and born in a country, u play for THAT country. If u are white and are born in a country, u play for THAT country.

Anyone agree?

First off, to answer your question ASSius, no I have not graduated from High School yet.

In fact I will be a senior next year, and I will not only be enrolled in honors and AP courses at my high school, but I will also be enrolled simultaneously in a post-secondary options program in a university here in my city. I will receive college and high school credit for the courses that I choose to take. I hope that answers your question =)

Indygo, I totally agree with you. I am most proud of people like George Weah, whom even though he knows that his nation will not play in the World Cup during his career, he still plays for them. Another good example is a player called Zaguinho in Mexico, who was born to Brazilian parents, but chose to represent Mexico because he was born in that nation.

I think it would definitely help those countries grow big in football if their players didn't move to other countries. I particularly do not like the way the U.S. has been recruiting these past years, but it seems that they have made more progress with their own youth players and are fielding more Americans thanks to "Project 40" (I think that's the name). By the way, what ever happened to David Regis ? Has he just vanished into obscurity ?

No, brother. It is not a nation!!!! I use a colony to try to make you understand that it belongs 100% to France. But to be more accurate, Guyana is a Oversea "Departement" of France. There is no such thing of a French Guyanese Passport. All the people of Guyana are born French citizens.
And, no there is no French Guyana team.

As for Vieira, you may be right. But some how he decided to play for France and when he decided to play for France (Under 18 and 21) he didn't know that he would one day play for France(A) and win the world cup.

No man! They may have French surnames but no family names!! Such as Jacques Songo'o or George Weah. But, your family name is the one that you got from your parents and that shows that somewhere along the line, he's got French blood.

But anyway, France has always been a land where a lot of people immigrated (for the cheese I reckon

). and I don't know if you've ever been to France but there are a lot of immigrant in France (Blacks, arabs, east Europeans...) and after 1 generation, these people earn their French Nationality and lose their old one and become 100% French citizen. It is just fair that they want to play for the country they've lived all their lives.

I am seriously considering closing this thread.

However, I would like Assius to answer me this - what is your opinion of black players related to slaves who were taken to European countries in the 1600s? They have had French, English or whatever nationality in the family for nigh-on 400 years. The colour of someone's skin does not make someone a native of a certain country.

I sincerely believe that Assius is entitled to post his views here, however much I oppose them. Maybe we can all learn something from this. If you talk about football, you talk about nations and eventually about people, so somebody's pride is bound to be hurt someday. What worries me is that people are invited to react on who they HATE in this topic, not much good can come from that. Let me tell you this: football wouldn't be half as good to watch without a team that you can support all the way, and Euro 2000 happens to be about nations. But humanity started off as a small group of the same race and background in one small corner of the earth, and it will inevitably end as a very large group so mixed that no one will be able to tell someone's ethnical background anymore. No racism or bigotry can prevent this.
I agree with Duke: scary, sad, sigh etc., BUT: not to be ignored. The fact that people with different skin colours play for European countries sometimes originates in a colonial past, but also in the will to have a good chance of winning a trophy or two. It doesn't matter. In 5000 years from now, the best teams will still win even though nations no longer exist, and people will still find reasons to put each other down.
Enjoy the differences while you still can instead of bitching and arguing about them, or there might not be a 5000 years from now.
Can we now go back to talking about football?
